Watched 6 hr of SHf streams since early access. Thoughts:
1. I expected Ryukishi07(the writer) to *** up my mind with his *** up story. Ryukishi07 did not disappoint. My mind is about as *** up as his story now :D
Can't wait to see more after a mental break.
2. I think the combat system execution has some issues. It uses a dodge/counter centric combat system. The problem is, in a survival horror game with tons of tight space and corners, with enemy jump scare attack from blind spots, you can't properly see the enemy nor properly dodge/counter them.
Essentially this combat system contradicts horror focused design philosophy. Imo dodge/counter centric combat system is an action game mechanic because you can see the enemy and focus on them. But it is a bad mechanic if horror is on a higher priority than action, because you are not supposed to see enemies all the time if you want the horror feel.
3. Many people also complained about weapon degrading system. However I think it is necessary in a survival horror game with no ammos. In survival horror game resource management and avoiding enemies is part of game play. Without weapon degrade or ammo limitation, you can't really create true tension and stress.
The fact that SHf got those complaint about the combat shows an issue when this series try to appeal to mainstream action game target audience. Then failed on balancing mainstream action game design and classic survival horror design. Then they attracted action game audiences with wrong expectations because of that.
4. There will be some cultural barriers if player can't read Japanese. Some of the environmental storytelling elements are in Japanese. I saw an English streamer got a bit stuck on the environment puzzle because he couldn't read the Japanese sign in the environment. Those who can read wouldn't get stuck the same way.
5. There are tons of smart psychological horror technique used in level design, I love ;D.
Ultimately, I think this will be a game that will be super unique and niche, but ultimately not mainstream.
Which is a good thing ;) we need more niche and unique games not same old mainstream games. ;) I look forward to see the end of this emotional journey.
