Umineko is what I'd classify as a shock horror/mystery hybrid that's worth looking at. Liked it enough to make a linkshell based on it. idr if the anime adaptation was as good as the VN, has been years.

I've been told it's because they don't provide any visual on the characters themselves, only (minimal) stats. They're just trimming down inventory.

Though someone may correct me if I'm wrong.
They are reassigning the inventory slots to main hand and rings.

It's just to debloat. Belts offer a small portion of stat budget that is being reallocated to other slots in exchange for removing the need to acquire them (and thankfully, the need to see them drop from alliance raids...) and gaining some extra armory chest slots in a couple of places where they were needed.
