I've voluntarily played female characters on other games just for a change of scenery (playing through Oblivion right now as a female Wood elf). After years of playing mostly male characters, it's always nice to see a woman get in on the action. Plus, after staring at the backside of big, muscular man for hours on end (depending on the game of course), you subconsciously start having gay thoughts. True story.
Why are you even staring at man ***? Are your eyes automatically drawn to it? lol.
I don't know, but personally for me I try to keep my eyes on the action rather than my character lol.
No. Just a peripheral/subconscious kind of deal. I mean think about it. I've played a male character on FFXI for the equivalent of 800 days+. That's a lot of time to be staring at the back of anything. The mind is a tricky beast. It's easier on one's mind to at least stare at the opposite sex so they don't have those weird subconscious thoughts.
I think my ex turned gay from playing too much Metal Gear Solid. True story.
Snake ***, the godliest ***.

I can understand a guy playing as a Mithra because they have different stats therefore you choose the race to fit your playing style.
Not judging or anything, just honestly curious.
Edit: Actually, vice versa too. If you're a girl why do you play as a guy? If you're a guy why do you marry a girl, ingame?

I usually don't play female characters on MMOs. The last time I did was when I began playing my first MMO when I was much younger (Elementary school). I decided that Magician was a more female type job because I was used to the Wizard on Diablo II being female. The weird thing was that I actually enjoyed the attention that being a female character brought at the time. I promptly stopped playing the female avatar once my brother began playing though, because it felt very weird. Ever since then, I pretty much strictly play male characters.
One of the main reasons I think that men do play a female character is because they have the ability to dress said avatar to their liking. I'll use The Sims 3 as an example. I've noticed that my sister prefers to dress the male characters to her fitting, while not putting the same level of detail to her female characters. I'm pretty much the opposite. When I play the Sims 3, I tend to put more detail in my female characters' wardrobes, while dedicating less time on my male characters. If you look at the plethora of custom content out for the game, you'll notice that a good majority of the male content is more to women's liking, while all the female content tends to be more sexually suggestive. I'm willing to bet that a majority of female content is created by guys, while a majority of male content is created by females.
That brings me to my original point. Video games allow us to create the ideal look for the opposite sex. I actually had a lot of fun when planning out and making my Adventuring Fellow's outfit (who is female). I spent a lot of time on that. I guess you can say it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one though.
I haven't really played a female avatar in over 8 years, but that's my take on things.

Because alter-egos don't have to be limited to what matches your appearance or personality in RL.
Perhaps it just seemed fun or fitting to go outside of something that pertains to yourself.

That's interesting, when I was younger, I liked the female characters in ff7 and 8 more. But then I got older and liked guys, so now I only play guy characters, and consequently like the guy characters more now :D

Leviathan.Cuddleslave said: Aside from...liking Galka a little too much I wanted to try actually playing as one rather then... lol constantly gawking at them. Well my thoughts where right its fun being a Galka!
My name was originally going to be Nostradamus but the name screen kept giving me errors so...I picked this name on a whim.
Before a few games had the option of playing a female, I'd always play the male role (Harvest moon, Pokemon & so on) if you could pick more then one type for your "hero" I'd pick the one who was big burly & heroic looking (Don't judge me >.> even before my Galka chasing I seen Galka as the big strong hero type) Names I chose where ether generic, greek god names or their "default" name like... Tidus, Link, Jack, Red/Ash and so on. (random tidbit if I ever had the proper specs I'd get XIV yes yes I know the ratings are terrible but just something free to play to pass time if I'm not on XI, I would have made a Rougadyn last names I still can't think of lol but Hellguard would have been named Hades & Sea wolf Poseidon)
I guess in a nutshell I'm more used to playing as a male charter over a female, but when there's an option to play as ether i'd pick the female usually naming her after a favorite charter or try to base her name around mine...Tohihroyu was different however xD was the nicest name in the random name gen at the time.
I know haters/trolls will viciously attack me but I find it fun playing as a big burly Galka over my tiny slender Mithra, I do enjoy DD jobs as her & chasing Galka & hume males, but seeing My Galka blow stuff up or help others its nice (and its cute when tarus sit in your big Galka lap)...plus *hides from torches & pitchforks* staring at his rear while his tail goes back & fourth as I run around xD I never really ran into any "problems" being a Girlka, just one where a guy was all "Girls should not play as guys. Its wrong." yet its ok for guys to play as girls? bah! whatever, I have my fun.
Ok... I better stop before this becomes a nasty WOT @_@
I always choose burly characters too. I think I see them as more heroic. My char in XI is a hume, but the bald sorta tough guy hume, I never liked the overly feminine haired humes. In XIV I play as a Roegadyn, and if I could change races in XI I'd be a galka instantly.
I just love the looks of my Roegadyn tanking with a shield and sword, or busting heads with a giant battleaxe :D I wish I could be a Galka BRD though ; ;

That's cool too I guess, I can understand animation preferences.
Yeah I like female hume monks, too.
Also: Does anyone else have problems with addressing people the right way? Like, female characters played by males you know? I have the habit of defaulting the the char's gender, even if I've know the player for a while.

What straight man doesn't want to look at a female's *** for an absurd amount of hours everyday?
If you ask me, looking at a male's *** all day is pretty homo~

Female characters tend to look better than male characters to any heterosexual male. If I'm going to have to stare at my character's *** for thousands of hours, I'd rather stare at a female ***... :)
(and that's the easy answer... obviously there are better reasons)

Playing female characters is also cheaper.
Have you seen the price for Elvaan F RSE?
It is way less inflated than Elvaan M RSE.

So i went with the E-*** with high DEX
same for me

Girls can't marry girls ingame. So I picked a boy. Didn't get married after all and wish I picked a girl now. It's really annoying having to explain this over and over to everyone ingame who keeps forgetting and goes back to male pronouns.

Picked a mithra due to the stat balance and the ear and tails heh. Not much to say on that i just like cats so was a no brainer. If they had male mithras I would have picked male long as they had the ears and tail. Was hoping 14 would have had playable male mithras :/

It's true.
However, at the same time, I know a guy on Asura (not sure if he still is) that pretends to be a girl, was going to get married ig to some idiot who didn't know any better too lol. He was a nutjob though.
Overall however, I think every guy that plays a female character has their own reason. From doing it for the stats, to just wanting to trick guys that see MMOs as an easy way to pick up girls because they can't do it IRL.

I'm just curious myself, why do you want to know the reason as to why people decide to play the opposite sex?
I always found the "I'd rather stare at a girl's ***!" excuse pretty funny. Like you said yourself, if you're spending a majority of your time staring at your avatar, you aren't doing much playing, which defeats the main purpose of playing an MMO.
