Harrisbanks, thanks for the confirmation, i got a question though, and it may be a dumb one, but if you do a complete reinstall of FFXI, you still retain the macros you saved to the server, right? This is the only thing that is keeping me from doing so, as i was already going to do what SE suggested, but was unsure of that.

Edit: i, too, also play on a 80 GB PS3

Edit #2: looked around and found out everything i needed, doing a complete reinstall of all FFXI discs as per what SE said. I'll update once the entire process is done.

Our PS2 is just a FFXI box. It stopped reading discs about a year ago. I gave in and got a new ps2 when WotG came out for the same problem. I really have no need for another one, and lack the money at the moment for a new 360 or PS3... Not to mention laptop just crapped out... I like our TV by TV setup in the front room, too. PC's really not a choice I want to look at...

why don't you go out and buy like a 200 dollar E-machine computer and play FFXI better then on the PS2
Why don't you learn the difference between the words then and than? It is not difficult at all.
My other question pertains to your suggestion that anyone buy a $200 e-Machine. Why would you tell someone to go out an buy an overpriced piece of crap? That is a kin to telling someone to go buy a Gamecube, load up Linux on an 80mm disc and run their apache server on it. Yes, you can do it, but unless you are just doing it for shits and giggles, you shouldn't do it. In fact, Linux on a GCN makes more sense than telling someone to go buy an e-Machine.

The PS2 died 3 years ago... please move on people.
last I checked mine still work, and they were releasing games for it until last year.

stop hatin' on a console that had a life span of nearly a decade

I've had my ps2, the same one, for 7 years now. No repairs, no returns. How many Xbox users can say that? Or PC users for that matter?
I still use my 8 year old single core x64 A7V333 PC for guests playing FFXI. I also still have my PS2, though i have not updated it in over 9 months. Both of these work as they were intended.

Dec. 7, 2010 03:30 [PST] From: FINAL FANTASY XI
Regarding an Issue Affecting PlayStation 2 Ver.: Follow-up 2

We would like to provide an update regarding the issue where players are unable to complete the version update and receive a message stating that there is not enough free space on the PlayStation BB Unit.

We have determined that the version update is being performed, but in some cases unnecessary files are being saved to the hard disk. These files might accumulate and take up hard disk space, thus preventing the version update from being completed.

Deleting these unnecessary files will allow you to perform the version update, but in order to delete them you must first perform a clean installation of FINAL FANTASY XI.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but if you are experiencing the issue described above, we ask that you please perform a clean installation of FINAL FANTASY XI.

Please note that we are planning on implementing a method for version updates to be performed even when there is little space available on hard drives.
* Even after the implementation of this system, a clean installation will be required to remove unnecessary files.

[How to Perform a Clean Installation]
1. Start the PlayOnline Viewer
2. Insert the PlayOnline/FINAL FANTASY XI disc into the Playstation 2 3. Select "Install" from the left menu of the PlayOnline login screen 4. Select FINAL FANTASY XI as the software that you wish to install 5. Once the FINAL FANTASY XI screen is displayed, select "Start Installation"

6. Once the following message is displayed, select "Yes"

FINAL FANTASY XI is already installed.
Reinstalling this disc will overwrite all existing FINAL FANTASY XI files.
Your character data will not be lost.
However, before you can play, you will have to download all the updates from the PlayOnline servers again.
Begin reinstallation?

7. Once the following message is displayed, select "No"

Preserve user settings file?
Select "Yes" to reinstall with customized settings such as macros and marker data left intact.
select "No" to perform a clean installation that restores default settings.
A clean installation is recommended if you are having problems with the program data.

8. Clean installation will now begin

Well, I have played on every system this damned game has been ported to... I like them all for different reasons. I drag the PS2 around for LAN parties-- What I have found with this update is that-- it would apply to a PS2 that has a driver version of 1.11 and not to a system with driver version 1.10. You can check your version by using the indicated green triangle button on the Browser/System Configuration startup screen. Can anyone confirm/disprove this? It does not appear we can update the driver software.
driver for what? your hdd?

It is listed on the page as PlayStation Driver

if you don't erase user files no, if you do yes.

If I were doing a clean install on a ps2 hdd I'd do a format anyway, but to be honest you should just wait for SE to fix the issue, unless you want to do like an 8 hour update (I have a pretty good connection and it takes a long time on ps2)

I've done a few reinstalls and unless you delete your user files you'll be fine, but I find unless you delete everything and start from scratch it typically wont fix anything. Just be patient for SE to fix it, they know the problem and admit to it* (key) so they'll fix it. Do me a favor and don't kill yourself in the meantime, as much as I like ripping on lolDRKs I don't want them to die.

they download with updates automatically, and once you registered the first time, you have them forever.

then wait or reinstall while saving your user files (wouldn't waste the time myself though, as it's a problem they plan on fixing) unless they come back and say that's the only way to fix it, but I doubt that.

i dont ever really play on my ps2, cept to log on it when I need to update my card info.. because its a walmart card. and doesnt work on PC through that w/e its called. anywho...

hearing all this stuff about how ppl cant do update on their PS2s i figured hell i'd see if mine was having the same issues.. and nope.

Weirdly enough my PS2 actually went through the update with no problems at all... I wish I could tell you guys why and help you guys through this because this is terrible T.T

SE screwed lots of ppl over... SE is being inconsiderate if they thinking everyone can just.. do a refresh install. on their ancients PS2s that prolly can't aither.
A. Read Discs.
B. Lost Discs.
C. Whatever else.

Man.. I feel bad for you guys who can only play on that system. My GF is having the same issue. Prolly gonna try and coax her into taking my ps2 thats already fully updated because she prides FFXI. just as much as I do and prolly most of you do.
