There have been quite a few threads if my memory serves me correctly. a FFXIAH iPhone App.

Then again, it doesn't really affect me so I wasn't paying too much attention.

hmm, I must have missed it then. I know that users have asked about it, but cant recall ever seeing any of the mods say that it actually existed.

Actually, come to think of it, that may have been something to do with Facebook. Either way, it doesn't concern me so you'd understand if I wasn't paying enough attention.

Probably feeding off the data on FFXIAH and providing it in a neat little candy wrapped, if the actual FFXIAH crew isn't behind it. Their server takes the load, the App seller takes the profit.

This app came out in September of 2009 and from what i've read on the app store reviews, it's lacking in a lot of features.

It costs $1.99, which i'm not going to waste my money on, because this site actually comes up perfectly on the iphone safari browser.

Seeing as it is:
A) Using FFXIAH resources.
B) Trimming out the ads.
C) Not made by FFXIAH devs. [as far as I know]
D) Not free.

I expect this app will stop functioning very soon.

edit:
There are actually 2 paid apps for ffxiah:
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/ffxi-ah/id354874672?mt=8
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/ffxi-auction-house/id329542802?mt=8

While I like the idea of an iPhone app, I absolutely disagree with lining some else's pockets for leeching off Jaerik and Scragg's hard work.

edit²:
I'll bet my bottom dollar that Gobbiebag also scrapes FFXIAH for info:
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gobbiebag/id329042526?mt=8

In browsing around for FFXI apps I'm thinking that VanaMini will be getting 2 of my dollars very soon. :3

If they create an app (should have forums too!!) I'd get it. Currently posting off
my iPhone. I'm not paying some random person money when they don't really deserve it etc. Not to mention it works ok in safari anyway.

Yup, it's not us -- it's made by a user. We're content to let him make a few bucks off it for the trouble, as folks have been asking for an iPhone app for FFXIAH for years and none of us have ever gotten around to picking up Objective C. We could shut it down if we wanted to.

We're less thrilled about other sites scraping our data and republishing it.

I hate the fact that this app isnt for blackberry's also.. but what you gonna do.. i agree with you jaer tho that its not a fair deal anyway you slice it.. but connecting directly ffxiah via this is much better then other sites copying what your doing.. if anything with phone apps.. ask for a kick back!

As far as I know, the app just hits the site through http behind the scenes, and scrapes the data on demand. It doesn't hammer the site continually through a dedicated connection, so it's not more expensive on our end than folks just browsing on a PC.

As far as people scraping our data for their own site, we have quite a number of detection algorithms for that running in the background. You'd be surprised how many people have tried. So far there's no major examples of it, but a few folks are quite persistent.

We toyed with the idea of actually licensing some kind of API for external data collection, for a fee. But demand wasn't high enough and nobody wanted to pay for it, 'cuz this is the intarwebz damnit, where everything should be free.

You're not bothered at all that the guy is scraping your site data and filling his own pockets with profits from the app?

^- this.

Setting up something like m.ffxiah.com with a template more optimized for mobile devices and serving smaller, more mobile-centric ads along with the content would:
- put the ad/donation money in the right person's pocket
- keep the service free for the end-users
- satisfy users with iPhones, Blackberries, Androids, et al.

Nerdspeak: same model, same controller, new view, more happy. :P

A Droid app would be nice, but then, like was said above, I just go straight to this site and have no issues.

I agree. The only thing I dislike about using it in droid browser is the loading time and the inconvenience if you push a wrong button, which are very small and likely to be mis-pushed. lol
