People have been speculating when FFXI will "die" for some time. Heck, for the past few years these post continue to circulate.
NO ONE knows for sure when it will "Die". And by "Die" i assume you mean not exist.
People's opinions are that it "Died" with:
1) The level cap increase
2) Uncapping CoP
3) Abyssea
4) Anything people don't like
5) Ect Ect Ect
Honestly, who friggin knows really. The way SE is handling FFXI IMO, it has years left. But again, who friggin knows.
The answer to your question? IDK, Play FFXIV since they are a few years from it being worth a crap :) (Ok maybe it is gonna be good by 2012?)

Lotro is free to play, but you have to do some strange things to get access to stuff the base players get. Husband, daughter and son play it, the user interface makes me crazy and they can have it. Husband plays XIV, I'm hoping it will change enough so i can enjoy it too..but right now it's just not fun.
Don't forget SE is comin out with a new MMO soon

I been spliting my time between this game and other games for the last few years. If ffxi ever dies i will just play the other games all the time. As long as there is a game that grabs my attetion i will be fine.

we'd like to believe that if we quit ffxi we'd be superstar success stories with all our awesome extra time but the sad truth is most of us would indeed just find another method of pissing it away

True, but surely there are better ways of spending your time than in front of a screen for hours and hours (and hours, and hours).
Anything really, from working out, to working hard at work for a promotion, to traveling around, reading, you name it.
Also, if you think you can't do something you're already putting a foot in the grave.

Diablo III will be a huge contender. Really any RPG. On its current release schedule, I'd probably play MML3 when it comes out 8 years from now too.
Hell, I might even look into FFXIV.

well seeing as ive been playing since 02, im naturally burned out of this game at this point. so ill just keep in contact with friends on msn, facebook, ect.

Indeed I did, as I was looking through my old posts. Here I am as well, 6 years later, on top of the many others years before that. Nice to see people still find this game enjoyable.

When FFXI does dissolve (hope it never does), I'll build a private server with Beastmaster as it was meant to be played.

During those breaks I catch up on life, get a tan, work out, and enjoy all the things FFXI kept out of my life. I regret a bunch of ***, hear a zone song like Gustaberg and relapse.
Its been like this for 14-15 years.
Who knows what will happen if FFXI didn't exist. I might try Heroin?
edit: I guess my biggest regret during FFXI breaks was playing FFXIV. That tops my list of regrets. even worse than losing a few thousand $ on a get rich fast scam.
