If only there were some way to tell/find out if someone is a good player that didn't involve social interaction in the form of friends or a linkshell.

If only square enix had implemented this into another game. Something like a rating system. Hmm I wonder if they will ever come up with such an idea?

Player Commendations in FF14 was their attempt at it, sadly it quickly just degraded to "Ill give you a +1 because you have a cool character name" regardless of player skill.

I feel bad because all I keep seeing is the princess bride meme about not knowing what the word means. How about if you are a player who is carried by other good players? Do you get vet status because you have been through it all? Asking for a friend...

Honestly, I kind of feel like I get carried through a lot of stuff when I play WHM. If it goes smoothly, I'm barely doing anything, so I feel like I'm getting carried. If things go south and I have to actually do my job, even if it's not my fault and I do my job extremely well, I feel like it was my fault, and therefore I am being carried.

Life with crippling self-hatred is hard.

No you don't get vet status and its very easy to tell a player that gets carried from one that doesn't. Hence why this thread was made. I quit the LS I was in just because we kept carrying players thru Aeonic weapons when we probably should have been charging.

Ah, and herein comes today's end game.

Many returning/new players getting back into the thick of it sometimes don't realize that many of their LS mates have spectacular gear that took them a loooooooooooooooong time to accumulate. Newer players are overwhelmed and don't want to have to put in that kind of effort and/or they simply don't have the money to even remotely strive towards such goals.

But... they want Aeonics. Where is the line drawn?

Do you tell that player to get to you in a year after they've substantially improved their gear? What if they're friends with you in that category. There might be expectations that you are supposed to help (read: Carry) them towards their Aeonic.

This can be a slippery slope indeed - especially if you're a leader having to make the hard decisions on who comes to the run(s) and who doesn't.

The line is playing in a support job role. If you don't have the gear to be a top tier DPS or tank or healer, theres always COR and GEO. Of the two COR requires the least amount of gear to be an effective buffer. Plenty of CORs running around with Aeonics they don't know how to use. Riotforcesix I believe even had an offer to carry CORs as long as they had the beads. Don't want to be COR? Well its not that hard to learn how to skillchain on SCH. There are options.

It doesn't help that people like to blame the WHM when they die because they had no DT gear on, have 1900 HP, and got hit for 2100 damage.

But I remember getting my Vagary Leg and Body clear, long, long, long ago. I was WHM, no mythic, poorly geared, and I spent the entire Perfidien and Plouton or however they're spelled fights casting Cure 2 and a handful of -na spells, the PLD was just that insanely unhurtable.

Those are basically the only two ways I feel about doing anything on WHM. Either I *** up, and it might be my fault, or everything goes so smoothly I almost might as well not be there.

A veteran at a job is something who has played the job for a long time. Nothing more, nothing less.

Wrong, that's too over simplified. Veterancy is the accumulation of battle experience over time. There are plenty of players that have been playing this game on the same job for an extended amount of time and are still ***and won't ever have a hope of grasping game mechanics. Do they have seniority in this game? Yes. Are they veterans? *** no, wiping to the same content over and over isn't gaining any experience or skill.

Being a veteran does not by itself imply skill, only experience (and yes, losing to something every time still gives you experience, even if it's not useful experience). People trying to tie the term to how good a player is in a way more concrete than "veterans are slightly more likely to be competent" are misusing it.

you guys sound ridiculous.

ffxi veterans could be anywhere on your spectrum of player-skill, whether they're pariahs on your server or exemplary samaritans.

this game had always been about bonding with the community in order to progress, until recent years where content has evolved and been retuned to accommodate dwindling numbers.

beginners or amateurs would not understand the time, hurdles, and feats necessary to accomplish your goals in this game. it behooves veterans and skilled players to translate that to ambitious people pining for bis gear among campaigns that sometimes trivialize months of farming.

mid-core... lol

If you don't understand the terms the gaming industry uses to market to consumers maybe you shouldn't try and participate in the discussion. LOL indeed.

you're applying these terms to a discussion about veteran vs amateur. maybe if you tone back your elitism, you'll understand terms like veteran and hardcore player are not mutually exclusive.

i see pretentiousness still pervades everything.

Which is why Dragon's Aery was always drama free, right? Take off the rose tinted glasses, FFXI - Utopia edition never existed.

Anyone that has ever had an encounter with me over the last 10+ years knows I'm far from elitist, if anything you are just misinformed.

The gamer spectrum isn't broken down into Amateur/Casual/Veteran/Elitist. It's much more complex.

Yes they are. You can be a veteran mid-core player that just stagnates at midgame. For most this is as high as they will ever reach.

I prefer rose-tinted over jaded. had some great times, had some bad times. bad seeds attempt to ruin other people's experiences, but there was plenty of healthy competition that would congratulate you on pulls more often than attempt to mpk you.

There was never a time a competing LS would "congratulate" another LS on a successful claim, stop it. No one had time for that when Ixion/KB/Sandworm were due to pop.

I'm not missing out on anything because as far as end game goes its never existed. The sense of community came from when you would help someone farm their magicked items for sub job. It came from escorting players to Jeuno for the first time. It came from helping players break Genkai. It came from EXPing off Crabs or Colibri.
