P&R being on the frontpage isnt the problem. It's how pointless the arguments in there are. If anything the title of the section is misleading because if you want to inform yourself on things this should really be the last place to look into.

My reasoning for this:

You see a thread where the topic gets you fired up, you go in and harmlessly post your 2 cents. Then, it proceeds to become butchered left and right and you're scared to even post a reply (I don't post there out of common sense because a conservative idea is going to be butchered ON SIGHT in this community.)

your not wrong about this at least.

If the idea can stand up on its own two legs, it will resist butchering. Bad arguments die bloody deaths. Don't blame partisanship for lousy argumentation and bad ideas.

Mockery, taunting and belittling might win an online argument but don't confuse that with actually being correct. The odds in this forum of finding a liberal consensus I'd say are better than average and shouting down the few conservatives is pretty common. it's good though, vastly outnumbering is the only thing that makes it remotely fair for bad liberal ideas.

So we're in agreement. If you're just looking for a round-robin of conservatives giving each other handies and nothing of substance being said, this isn't the place for it. It's really not the place for it to happen among liberals, either. A quick glance at some of the recent discussions shows reasoned arguments on both sides relying on neither consensus politics (which, in politics, IS the same thing as truth) nor disregard of facts. It's been a beautiful thing.

What is ironic is that, yes, there is a higher proportion of left-leaning folks around here, but it doesn't actually create the railroad you're mentioning. The spectrum of liberal/left-leaning folks means that we have quite a lot to argue amongst ourselves, but too often someone comes in with a partisan comment or something ridiculously insupportable and the pig pile begins. Stop trying to boil everything down to us versus them (or liberal versus conservative or whichever binary generalization you like), focus on making a sound argument, and even if no consensus is reached, everyone walks away at a certain level of satisfaction. It's so easy.

So intelligent discussions and disagreements would happen occasionally between the left and the far left if conservatives just kept quiet? Got it. The answer can only come from the left. You are intolerant and you just admitted it. Everything said that goes against your beliefs you summarize as partisan and ridiculously insupportable and you respond with cruelty. It is immature, narcissistic and borderline sociopathic.

You're very good at capturing exactly the attitude that the partisan provocateurs consistently bring to the debate. I assume you're defensive because you suspect you're among them. Examine that. And consider that I've defended and agreed with you on many occasions.

There's a strange variation on confirmation bias that I noticed years ago as a result of forums: people remember the negative stuff. When someone agrees with or even compliments us, it gets put into short-term memory to be flushed the next time we get distracted or go to sleep. When someone disagrees or, worse yet, causes us to feel insulted, it gets added to an acid-dipped block of memory that may as well be labeled "Enemies List."

Combing my imperfect memory, there's only one person I've conversed with on these forums who has never said something I agree with nor made a defensible argument nor impressed me in some way. And it's none of the people you're likely to suspect.

And I never said the answer comes from the left. I said that we'd argue amongst ourselves if someone didn't show up and paint a big red target on their face by saying something patently ridiculous. Most of the time that is some far-right lunacy, but that's just because we don't have many (or any?) far-left lunatics around to balance the debate. I'm probably the closest you'll come as I've actually hypothesized about socialist policies in a positive manner from time to time.

the big problem is that there is such a large wasteland between the middle left/right and the far left/right. the extremes become fodder for mockery because their ideas are radial to the majority and moreso because they are often ridiculous and baseless. try stepping out of you're bubble and looking at things objectively, like going to a bar sober and seeing how ridiculous all the drunk people sound.

And yet there's an ironic problem here: people get drunk by thinking they're drunk. Lots of studies have been done where people in a social situation (e.g., 20 people in a bar) are given non-alcoholic drinks but told that they're alcoholic and the result is that they disinhibit themselves without the chemical assistance.

And the same kind of problem happens everywhere. If you suspect that you've just entered a den of conservative baby-eaters, you're going to react accordingly until someone pulls the veil off and indicates that you're surrounded by actors or merely deceived by misperception. And, like the non-alcoholic bar example, if what you really want is to get into an knock-down fight with people of an opposite political ideology, your expectation will ensure it happens even when none of your perceived opponents exist.

What does that have anything to do with this conversation? No one accused you of that. Well, I didn't, at any rate. You're pretty quick to jump to slinging insults and recriminations and get defensive, though.

I find it amusing that people think this forum is overpopulated with the "left" when the truth is far from that...

Almost as far from the truth as Obama being a Socialist is.

What the hell is a Republican, anyhow? A Democrat who likes guns? They're both big-government, huge-expenditure lackwits who pander to their electorate while doing as little as possible to serve them.

While also serving against themselves in being pro-big business at every corner, instead of just most corners.
