I just recently switched to pc. I tried to plug in and use an xbox one controller, but it causes the game to freeze. I can't get pass the login screen. It will cause the game to freeze during gameplay as well. If I unplug it, the game will unfreeze. I as using windows 10.
Unplug it, uninstall the driver and try it again

Did that a few times. No luck. Tried different usb slots. Tried a bunch of random ***I read in forums. Maybe I just need to start over and problem solve more.

Could windows controller guide be causing an issue? try pressing the guide button to see if that toggles the guide menu and maybe the freezing.
its unusual that the game does not crash after it unfreezes... ive never heard of that. sounds like a program trying to open when you plug it in.

Had a friend with this problem, she solved it by reinstalling ffxi.

Can you test to see if this happens with any other game?

Omw home in a little bit. I'll fiddle with things and repost my progress
I'm assuming the xbone controller is an x-input device, and that the gamepad config for ffxi was configured as such?
I don't have one, so I can't really test it but I've seen others have it work fine. Quick question, what type of usb port are you plugging it in? Should also go to Xbox one settings and update the controller
Question 1, are you using windows 10?
Question 2, are you using wired or wireless? I use wired xbox 360 controller 1st go to windows program/apps[left of task bar, window icon.] Go to Playonline> Final Fantasy XI config. Click on Gamepad settings Top right click on bow that says [Enable Gamepad] Bottom right Alternate Setup E. [Note: after you do this you can change your buttons if you want, not needed] Click ok. Click ok, and save. In windows, do a search, type in device manager At the bottom you should see xbox peripherals. Click on the greater sign > right click xbox controller for windows, click on update drivers Click on Browse my computer for driver software. Click on "Let me pick from the list of divice drivers on my Computer". For me its the 1st. one "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows 10.0.10586.0 You will now need to reboot the computer to be able to use the drivers. Remember I have windows 10, 64bit, xbox360 wired controller. If you don't have this setup, I suggest you do a search on the net for the setup you have. Hope this helps. Good luck Offline

Ok, so I got the controller to work after messing with drivers and config menus. Now when the controller is plugged in, my esc, ctrl, alt, and enter keys don't work on my keyboard. Lol. Everything else works on the keyboard. Any ideas?
Don't work at all, or in the game?
Having same issues, thankfully I still have old F310 Logitech controller that works fine and not giving issues. Searched all last night as I just got done loading up FFXI onto new build I put together and was getting the white crashing screen, only to find out it's some stupid MS driver issue...after attempting re-install...lol. GL and I'll keep an eye out for answers myself.

Ok so everything works now. I used config (E) on ffxi config menu for the controller. I checked xinput on and everything else off. I still need to plug in the controller after the game loads. As for my keyboard not working. After i opened it with windower, keyboard starting working fine. So I'm not sure why. I'm just happy its all good now.

I have 3 pc's they're all doing the samething after the 3/3 windows update. I revert 1 back to windows 7 that one is working fine then went and bought a new laptop and install ffxi on it exactly the same thing have to load ffxi without controller then once i plug in the controller the keyboard doesnt function correctly. FFXI is the only game it does it on and only when using windower.
Ive always used a 360 controller, then swapped to xbox one controller. It would let me in game but nothing would work right. And yes i had it set up properly. Just doesnt seem it works right without some kind of xpadder type crap. Best bet is to go to amazon and buy you those $12 xbox 360 controller and just play with that and save yourself the headache.

It turns out it's not just my XBox 360 controller, but everything I have plugged into my USB ports. I use my phone for Mobile Tethering to play the game while I'm out and that too freezes. I had to switch it over to Mobile Hotspot to get it to run.

I've used Gamestops "PC advanced" controller for the last 5 years with no issue.. Maybe check into getting one of these if you dont mind it being modeled after a playstation controller.
Not surr if it just xbone controller but im fine using a dualshock4 with emulated xb360 drivers (using inputter application)
