FFXI References in other games?
Sorry to disappoint, but that's actually a reference to Dark Souls.
Quote: The "This unit is currently able to traverse the Abyss" is possibly a reference to Dark Souls, where the player requires to equip a certain item to traverse "The Abyss" and fight a certain boss. URF was great fun though.. Do references in FFXIV and Dragon Quest count? a leblanc with rabadoodles before deathfire? psh, lock this thread!

Welcome to the NHK made some FFXI anime, even includes a gilseller or 2.
YouTube Video Placeholder While I won't discount the possibility that the URF buff is a reference to Dark Souls. It seems like it would be a better reference to Abyssea. URF buff = Atma/Cruor buffs

YouTube Video Placeholder The activation code he scratches from the sheet of paper he got from the other guy says "BAKAYAROU" in a mash up of letters and numbers. That parody had the best of me when I watched that series. Covers all bases on what FFXI is about ! Well it's not XI but its a Final Fantasy reference in another game. WELCOME TO THE NHK!!!!!!! It is my LS name and my avatar!!!!!
Final Fantasy 27 eh? I wonder what the plot will be like considering they are pretty deep and 'spacey' already!

I always thought what Torotoro-san(Lol) said at the end was quite chilling. It is even creepier that many of the events that happened in NHK occurred to me IRL down to some unnerving similarities. Is it really commonplace to get almost catfished by a WHM mithra, and get sucked into a pyramid scheme by an old acquaintance from high school?...Or should I start being cautious of cute 18 year old asian girls trying to 'Cure' me of my mild hikikomori tendencies? I had to start laughing when she walked in on him playing and then came back dressed as a catgirl and started meowing until he chased her out.
Still not done with the series yet, but it is the first anime I've watched in years that has held my attention. Not bad for a 2007 show, huh ? Soon enough it's going to be 10 years old lol.
Time flows, relentlessly... Leviathan.Draugo

Well, they may not be direct references, but I saw a few in Sword Art. Early on during the player meeting for the Floor 1 Boss, one of the characters did reference the job system (Might of been a nod to Ragnarok but meh.) Second was from a FFXI fan video. During the AFO arch, one of the characters refers to another to an "Asshat". May not be direct references, but just ones I've noticed.
