Windows 8 and FFXI
I'm having trouble with FFXI on my new laptop. The graphics card is the standard Intel HD card. The character and npc models do not show up in the game and eventually crashes the game/POL. Any help would be appreciated.

Keep those instructions if it does, you may have to do it again Offline

You don't need to roll back anymore. Update your driver.

From what I remember, these were the following Intel GPUs that can run FFXI: (Believe me, the older Intel graphics HD/GMA was *** confusing to figure out back then.)
* - Core i3/i5/i7 series Clarkdale/Arrandale ** - Sandy Bridge Celeron, Pentium, Core i3/i5/i7 2000 series *** - Ivy Bridge Celeron, Pentium, Core i3/i5/i7 3000 series ^ - Haswell i5/i7 4000 series, Unknown/Unreleased Haswell Celeron/Pentium NOTE: Sandy Bridge Core i7 3820/3930K/3960X/3970X and Ivy Bridge Core i7 4820/4930K/4960X DO NOT have Intel HD Graphics on-die. Requires driver update for FFXI to run: (Bolded/Italicized above) NOTE: They are current as of the day this was posted. Because drivers are no longer developed for many of the older Intel GPUs, their last driver updates were some time between 2009 to 2012 depending on the model. Intel GMA 950 (REQUIRED - FFXI fails to load in many cases. Performance is very poor to somewhat poor.) - Windows XP 32-bit - Windows 7 32-bit - Windows 7 64-bit Intel GMA 3000 (REQUIRED - FFXI will not load without updated drivers. FFXI performance is somewhat poor at the lowest settings.) - Windows XP 32-bit - Windows 7 32-bit - Windows 7 64-bit Intel GMA 3150 (REQUIRED - FFXI will not load with the base drivers from Windows installation and Windows Update. Ensure settings are at the lowest for FFXI to run.) - Windows XP 32-bit - Windows 7 32-bit - Windows 7 64-bit Intel X3000, X3100, X3500 (REQUIRED - FFXI WILL NOT LOAD IF THE DRIVERS ARE NOT UPDATED. DirectX and hardware acceleration issues are common errors without updated drivers. Ensure settings are at the lowest for FFXI to run.) - Windows XP 32-bit - Windows 7 32-bit - Windows 7 64-bit Intel X4500 and possibly X4500HD & X4500MHD (Note: These are upgraded versions of the X3000 series, so FFXI should work on these.) - Windows XP 32-bit - Windows 7/Vista 32-bit - Windows 7/Vista 64-bit Intel HD 2000/3000 (Sandy Bridge) (REQUIRED - Fixes issues with missing character and NPC models.) - Windows XP 32-bit - - - Windows 7/8 32-bit - Windows 7/8 64-bit Intel HD 2500/4000 (Ivy Bridge) & Intel HD 4200/4400/4600/5000/Iris 5100/Iris Pro 5200 (Haswell) (REQUIRED - Pixelated fonts and missing character models have been reported. The updated drivers will fix these issues.) - Windows 7/8 32-bit - Windows 7/8 64-bit Not included: Windows Vista versions for many of the drivers, and the PowerVR versions of the Intel GMA chips. It's been reported that many of the PowerVR based-chips have very buggy drivers and lack 64-bit support. If the driver links are wrong or FFXI still doesn't run, tell me and I'll update the links. Almost always updated versions of the Intel drivers fixes issues with FFXI. Other times, like with my Dell laptop and HP netbook, both drivers and DirectX update fixes the issue. Fenrir.Brimstonefox

Hmmm, that link worked, I wonder if the intel site was pointing me to the wrong version.
Thanks! I forgot to mention, one of the older Intel GPUs-- the GMA 950 or 3000 series-- does not have hardware transform and lighting (T&L). Therefore, FFXI will not run even with a driver update.
And, for one of them, I believe the GMA 950 series, had a driver update that enabled hardware T&L through software but FFXI performance was poor at best. I forgot which and the thread that mentioned it on another FFXI forum no longer exists. >< So, if you have an older Intel chipset, I highly recommend just getting a dedicated video card if you have a desktop PC or get a new computer, laptop or desktop, altogether that isn't as old as the game or the PS2. Apparently, the linked drivers by Intel for the HD Graphics 3000/2000 for Sandy Bridge is incorrect.
(Why would Intel link the wrong drivers for the correct product?) Correct link for Windows 7/8 64-bit are here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23102 Windows 7/8 32-bit are here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23101&lang=eng |
