Hello, I'm attempting to get final fantasy, steam version of ffxi to work on my new laptop.
I've got through a few barriers steam related... now...
I log on to final fantasy , click character select, no model for my character is displayed.

I can log on, but all i can see is names of characters/npcs above them i can target things and see their animations like when a synergy furnace explodes i can see that but not the furnace, or people with glowly vnwnm bodies, i can see that glowing spot that's it...

hOW? here are my specs...

Windows 8 64x or some crap...

i've had this problem with windows 8, you have to go to your driver and graphic card and roll it back, something about the updated version doesn't make the character sprites load. i guess the game just can't handle the better graphics card or something.

I'll list step-by-step of what fixed it for me:

-Control Panel
-System
-Device Manager
-Display Adapters
-Right click graphics card/driver (forgotten what it actually is) -> properties
-'Driver' tab
-Update Driver
-Browse my computer for driver software
-Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer
-Select "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2) and click 'Next'

That should fix it, at least it did for me..
Keep those instructions if it does, you may have to do it again

i agree with toebag, sometimes the graphics driver auto updates and you gotta go through the process again.

Are you using windower or regular POL?

If using Windower 3.4 try 4.0, if using 4.0 post on the Windower 4 Beta post explaining your issue, the programmars are there helping to fix bugs

Windower 3.431 *can* work on Windows 8, but your milage may vary. I used it since an early release of windows 8 but it did crash now and then.

Windower 4 fully supports Windows 8. It's in open beta now and most of the bugs have been ironed out.

Download it here: http://windower.net/Windower4Setup.exe

Also important to note that Windower 3.431 will never be updated to fully support Windows 8 or Seekers expansion update. Windower 4 is the new version and once it's officially released, it'll be the only Windower! So check it out now and feel free to hit us up if you have any questions!

It's also possible something in your registry got messed up, like if you used Windower launcher and set it to something weird, then tried to run POL without it. Changing your registry is beyond the scope of my support, but you could do most of it the windower 3.431 launcher and FFXI Config program (launchable inside steam) to get them to normal values.

Here is your fix!!!

Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 .... you need to change it to this one:

Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2)

I had the same problem. Go to device manager > display adapters > right click > update > browse locally > select from... > WDDM version...

POOF! problem should be solved.

I do attempt to change to Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2)

It makes me restart, than crap happens and some other graphics driver under the tab turns off AMD Radeon HD 8750M when i enable that one again my screen starts flashing till i restart the laptop, THAN the first one turns off again, it's endless! Perhaps more tweaking around with windower ver 4 might help something

Hehe, ok I will try to restart Capnspike, some reason I just had 1140 or some odd corrupt files, i logged into and played a little on regular POL... I attack a monster and evertime it attacked me it said "I gain 184 exp" , and i cast a spell "Something something the mob resist" so soon as i start casting, oh it was awesome fun! Did windower4 change all these files around ?

I'm not entirely sure what else i did, but it's running fun fast fancy now
Thanks ya!
So many issues surpassed... lamest one was steam would not update playonline so i had to deleted steam content for play online, and redownload it starting a new system is lame lol.

I recently purchased a new Laptop which has Windows 8 as its operating system. I bought FFXI off of steam and downloaded that to the laptop, along with the new expansion. If I launch the game through steam it works just fine. However, when i try to run through windower or windower4 I get as far as the play button and then pol crashes. Anyone have any suggestions?

So I have been having issues with windower on windows 8. First I was using 3.XX and I of course had driver errors of invis chars, fixed that and everything ran fine. Then one day my POL crashed while i was playing and upon relaunching i could not use any windower features, it launces and says its in windower mode but plugins dont work. I have since upgraded to windower 4 and continue to have the same problems. Even went as far as reformating my PC but still just loads in windowed mode with nothing available. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's related to windows 8 or not, but I lose my macros as soon as I make them and switch books. It's a very annoying problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled windower and then tried to run normal ffxi and just save macros, but it does the same thing. Probably related, but my chat history gets replaced with stuff that happened like a week ago. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
