For all the fail and arbitrary bullcrap the development team has thrown at us over the years, Final Fantasy XI is one of if not THE largest and most fleshed out JRPGs in existence on top of the fact that it's got Final Fantasy in the name. The fact that the game is tailored to make me genuinely care for my silent character and believe that he is an extension of my persona and "personally" involves me in its developing story (as opposed to pages and pages of out of the game lore) seals the deal and creates a bond with this game that I have not had with any other, online or off.

All that combined with the generally fun gameplay keeps me holding on. I just miss all of my friends who've quit over the years; friends are the meta needed for full enjoyment of an MMORPG beyond the 30 to 50-hour cut-off of offline RPGs.

I suppose two people can look at the same thing and see something different. You could try Tactics arena online, it's a pretty fun way to kill a few hours.

Another thing I thoroughly enjoyed was the HNM era at 75 cap. Nothing to this day will be as fun as camping Tiamat for 48 hours straight, checking in on 30 minute windows and it going to force with 5-6 other LS out there, and fighting that massive dragon with a large audience doing anything in their power to slow you down.

you sir have a very strange sense of enjoyment/fun.

Enjoying playing with people who know how to play and worked for their gear and didn't just have it handed to them. Yup, pretty strange.

don't really see how anyone's gear is "handed" to them, but ok.

I don't see waiting around to play a game as fun, and that's all NM camping is.

"how is XI anything like Tactics?"

Dual job systems, individual job levels, job traits and abilities?

Edit: quote fail.

Tactics didn't have dual jobs, multiple jobs sure, but that still isn't much like Tactics. All the games had job traits and abilities.
may i try to understand the handing items to them part. well i know not all people worked for there items i had a friend by me one item that i still use to this day but he was a good friend,+ i was part of his endgame shell and helped them with runs back before the updated dyna in my own way maybe that was a thanks i am not sure i do not remember. but some people do not work for there items and just ask everyone to buy there items for them with doing little to no work period to help meet the goal of what they wanted.

grant i know that still gos on today it will still go on till the end of gaming.

if i missed what u where trying to say please let me know

Wasn't camping the NMs part that was fun, but that can be fun if you have a good LS. The fun part was the fights.

meh the countless hours wasted camping ruined any fun the fights may have had for me I guess...

I still think it's insane that there's NM's with 24hour timers on them... (I guess I'm one of the few, or the GM's don't like when you rip on them for their screwy system as I've been jailed for complaining about it before in Jeuno...)

to each their own I guess.
i do not think u can be jailed for that u are free to speak your mind if u go about it the right way. u must of said something more,do u know if u did.

What it means is that what was FFXI back thena and what it is now are two totally different things.
Before you really had to "work" to stay in a Linkshell to get endgame gear.
HNM LS used to work all around the clock (i have accounts of people holding sandworm for hours to keep repop time out of jp time etc).
You not only had to know the ins and out of your job, but also the group tactics to partecipate in an event (remember was different at cap 75, you had the need of different jobs and everyone doing right), but also take care on not to be a douche in order to get accepted in End game lses.
Now in abyssea is all lowman and there is no need of large lses in order to get good gear (reputation mattered a lot and word travelled fast).

Let alone that (my personal rant) finishing rank missions/cop and story line is a joke and i dont think finishing any of those would really give a sense of accomplishments anymore to a new player.

I dont know if i were to start now if i really would care about storylines/community etc.

what did the gm tell u that the jailing was for.

i just do not understand why they would jail u for what u said unless i am missing something.

i do not know if i will like doing the story now if i can solo every fight my self it dose not sound fun.

For spamming, when I was holding a conversion, I know the difference, apparently the GM did not.

Got a 3 day suspension for that one too... (well it was second offense on my account, but I can't recall for the life of me what the first was...)

As was said earlier, setting my own personal goals and working to complete them. It will be 7 years at SummerFest this year, and I like the annual events. I get all nostalgic.

I mainly to craft and mess with the economy for the first 6 years and it was fun. I stick with Social LSs and current one does a lot of olde skool stuff and even XP parties.

Am I the only person who remembers that even though reputation of being a -whatever- traveled fast, linkshell leaders rarely removed players so long as once in a while they did something useful? Short of two linkshells on my server at the time of 75, I don't remember the name of any other player who so much as understood how to play his/her job well, so the whole "it was different then" nostalgic memory is a fairytale.

Even though most old school players quit, the 95% of those who stuck around are still as awful now as they were then, perhaps even more so because having any semblance of good gear and an emperyean/relic ENTITLES a player to be good, yet somehow remains elusive.

Holding a NM for 4 hours to remove it out of JP time was douchy, and going against it earned a kick. Being a douche endgame was also a requirement, which was only circumvented by having access to multiple accounts, a kraken club, or a relic.

Yeah, it was different back at 75. Now if someone acts like a whiny **** or doesn't seem to listen, you don't have to put up with him/her because they're leaders favorite. Now it's possible to inform them of their inability to play a ten year-old game, ask them to improve on the spot or remove them, and find a player who hasn't had their head in the sand for the last decade. Take the last portion with a grain of salt because most, if not all, of us who run events with a handful of shout folk know the names of the ~30 people worth inviting.

On topic: short term goals. If life had an option to farm Dynamis for 2mil a day, I'd play that instead.

Edit: 60 people if you speak Japanese well enough

I played ffxi and wow both fairly extensively. (And L.O.R.D though I don't think that counts!). WoW never quite moved me the way ffxi did.

I started playing ff on the na (ps2) release. I think for most people, what keeps them around is the community/their friends, even if the community has kind of gone to ***compared to how it used to be. Seems to me, the people who don't get much into the community or develop friendships, don't really stick around long. Maybe it's just me, but this game is very lonely/sad/boring without friends to hang out with.

Also, as much as I'm torn about the game becoming so easy, it's also nice to be able to complete things like relics, that years ago, only a select few could. When I think I start missing the way the game used to be, I just remind myself of things like 8-10 hour Ulli camps with 50+ people in the room, going over a year without seeing whm af2 body drop from glacier, or 3 last window nq king days.

Still, nothing in any game I ever played compared to getting my first Nobles back in like ~2005, after a 3-4 month super stingy drop rate from Kirin.

u know the time between shouts that se calls it spamming right if i remember it is 30-50 sec between each one that is not classed as spamming i would need to contact a gm and ask.

Lol..where else can i meet and "rub shoulders" with people from all over the continent for such a ridiculously low price compared to air fare (around the world in 90 minutes or less). And despite, race, nationality, religion and w/e people are raging wars over or disputes, players here despite it all share a common goal...for some reason we all aspire to reach "endgame",or _________ ,just fill in the blank.

I enjoy making new characters and leveling them up, starting over as something I've never done before, E.G: Playing a different race, focusing on different things before rushing into leveling.
