wow, 4 hours without a single comment or flame war, what is the world coming to?
on topic: looks to be interesting, but even if I felt like contributing to publisher's income I don't have the time to read, and there's many books ahead on the list that I've been tempted to acquire.
Aye, you're right OP. The "war on women" is nothing new ... just like the abortion and contraception debates ... nothing new there either to be honest.
Women's rights and abortion, etc. always seem to rise to the forefront of the American conservative media and political talking heads' rantings and ravings whenever the economy is improving during a liberal President's tenure.
It's as if the GOP's campaigning algorithm is ...
Step One: propagandize the failings of the American economy over the last 6 months.
Step Two: if the economy hasn't been failing during the past 6 months, resume publicizing disdain for abortion and try to suppress women's rights as much as possible, until such time that the economy takes its next downward swing, and at that time, switch back to Step One.
The worst part is that lots of Americans buy into that crap, hook, line, and sinker. "Politics are hard, I guess. So, dumb it down for me, as simple as possible, and I'll go with it."
This is still going on because those pushing for this type of legislation don't give up, no matter how many times they lose or get knocked back, they continue to press forward. It isn't like a war, where the losing party is scattered. Persistence is their game, and they'll win so long as they keep appealing toward the religious masses.
The goal is to keep the masses arguing against republican and democratic agenda/belief so the veil is not lifted that no man in this country is free while they build an arsenal no revolution can thwart >.> but thats one theory.
On the other hand, the bible is one of the most sexist books in history so can yell at Christians while you are at it (and about every other religion).

Mostly all religions that were created during or after the heavy shift towards agrarianism in their respective societies share that trait. I'm not entirely sure why, just an observation.
Everything before agrarianism seemed to be pretty fair, sometimes even female dominated.
I wouldn't say that agrarian societies suddenly shifted towards patriarchal hierarchies because many pastoral and horticultural societies like the Masai in Africa, pre-Columbian Mesoamerican groups and tribes in New Guinea maintained strong male-dominated societies completely isolated from Eurasian culture.
Women are simple more valuable than men both from a cultural and biological perspective. If you control the women you then have the reigns to future generations of that society of both males and females.
Much of the push by the Republicans is a short run plan to turn women against their own social liberation and back into the traditional roles dictated by antiquity. The long run plan is to control breeding population to propagate religious adherents and crush the opposition with sheer numbers.
I just want the government to stop being stupid, spend a lot less, and what they do spend, spend it on ideas that actually work, eliminate unnecessary redundancies, be responsible in it's care for the environment, for the most part leave other countries to their own business and to leave me the hell alone and let me eat, sleep, and screw the way I want to. WHY CAN'T THEY JUST DO THAT? I WILL STILL GIVE THEM 1/3 OF MY MONEY. GDI.
unfortunately we need to be in other countries, the only difference I say is that the countries we are in, to be the world police we should tax, but some think that would be a sign of weakness...
yes because a failing economy isn't...
as to most things I'm a progressive while being part libertarian, I want things to move forward and get better, but at the same time preserving rights, basically the opposite of the republican party, they want to strip away rights while being backwards, no movement. To be fair the policies of both parties want to strip away freedoms, IE: TSA.
Serious question since the TSA has been brought up:
How exactly would you guys propose making airline travel safe without infringing on the rights of citizens?
It's an interesting dilemma because on one hand if you do nothing under the banner of protecting rights and something happens on a plane, the people will accuse the gov't of being asleep at the wheel and not doing enough to keep people safe.
If you do ramp up security with patdowns, body scanners and inspections then the people accuse the gov't of infringing on rights and we get cases where people get outraged when an old lady is subjected to a cavity search.

The most recent version of the "War on Women" is nothing more than a democrat smokescreen to gin up their base's support instead of giving it away because of failed policies. No one ever was even talking about banning contraception until liberal media figures brought it up in a republican primary debate this winter.
EDIT:
Here's the question that started it all.... I remember thinking "Hmmm what an odd out of place question." at the time. What was it, ~6 weeks later that we were all talking about Sandra Fluck" spending thousands of dollars a year on contraception as a Grad student and asking her fellow taxpayers to foot the bill?

Rick Santorum either didn't exist or was a democrat in your world then.
Bills being proposed all across the country that are attempting to ban or severely limit contraception, defund Planned Parenthood and ban abortions also don't exist.

Please inform me as to which bills are out there that seek to BAN contraception (please do not include abortion as a form of contraception)? How does insisting that birth control not include infanticide = war on women.
Also, how does insisting that you pay for your own birth control = war on your gender. I pay for my own condoms, I guess there must be a war on men then too?

lolwut? Have you heard of a religion named Christianity?
Christian war on contraception is not the topic. There are Christians in the republican party as well as the democrat party and likely ones that don't like contraception.

I have never paid for a condom, but I live almost across the street from the PP.
I'm sure they'd be happy to know that most of them got used as party balloons.
Never paid for a condom, then tries to make fun of someone's use of condoms. Doesn't pay for condoms to prevent unwanted pregnancies and all that entails, but plays a subscription video game. Swell.
I think he means that he's never paid for them because he walks across the street to PP and then only uses them as party baloons because he can't get laid. ^^

If you're seriously going to try to pretend that xenophobic, homophobic, ghost-worshipping bible thumping bigots aren't the bread and butter of the Republican base then I not going to attempt to reason with you.

It's more that anal penetration requires a greater commitment level than I'm usually willing to embrace, but it's always good to have them around in case it does come up so there's no temptation to make a bad decision.
It flat out amazes me that ppl are still so naive to think that everything is one 'groups' fault. (No intelligent person is all one thing). And every group, every party, every religion, every everything, has its share of crazy ppl and extremists. If you have a problem with a topic, fine. Debate the topic. Maybe even the individual person, but don't just attack group names blindly.
The whole Democrat vs Republican, liberal vs Conservative, ***has got to end (To name two). Try being a person first and think for yourself.
