On an ethical note... it is Black History Month. Whitney Houston did open the doors for numerous African-American musicians to enter mainstream media. It really is unfair to pigeon-hole the women solely as a drug-addict.

Because people like Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, and the list goes on didn't exist, right? =)

Incorrect. =) Prior to Houston, those musicians you just listed didn't dent the pop-mainstream door in the US. They were limited to gospel, soul, r&b, etc. She really did allow African-American singers, particularly African-American females, to penetrate the popular music(aka Top40 music) via her music in the 80's and "The Bodyguard OST." U can pickup Rolling Stone, or Billboard they both paid major tributes to her and reiterate this point.

Kelly Rowland, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson and Chaka Khan have also gone on to mention this point since her passing.

Question do u live in the US or Germany? I'm curious.

I feel a "respect is earned" versus "everyone deserves respect" debate coming...

Respect is earned! Also, Just an opinion the majority of people i know that join the military are people whom don't want to work or didn't graduate high school. Not saying they're dumb or lazy, just saying I can only assume that most of these people don't care about respect or honestly know what it means.
EDIT: Soldiers don't really deserve respect for sitting at base doing physical work and gaining benefits. Unless your on the front line which the majority aren't

Debatable or outright wrong. The woman was born in 1963, which means she was 9 when The Temptations kind of peaked. Aretha Franklin and Jimi Hendrix were born in 1942. As far as the musical world was concerned, African-Americans had been okay for quite a while before Houston hit the scene in the 80s.

If she opened any doors, it was for models. She was the first or one of the first models to realize that she could make more money being both pretty and singing.

Oh my! Where are the engineers of FFXIAH?!? I NEED A time machine now! Never fear Old Blue Eyes, Grace Kelly, and Bing Crosby! I will notify them at once that they were merely singing and dancing with a figment of their imagination!

On a side note: Does anyone have any objections to me also telling Grace Kelly that she may want to avoid those winding, mountainous roads in 1982? I mean, if I'm there already may as well...

Je ne suis pas Allemand! Je suis Belge! Regardez mon drapeau!

Haben sie ein problem mit Deutschen, oder denken sie, sie wissen mehr über pop-kultur als Europäer?

d singing.

Well Byrth. I would argue the temptations were mainly R&B/Soul/Disco. I really wouldn't consider them mainstream pop. They had "My Girl", but most heavily attribute them to the whole Motown genre, not Pop. One definitely could debate it. African-Americans in the US were really confined to specific categories of music by record labels prior to Houston is what i would argue. I kind of went into detail in the second post, on page 4. They also really didnt open it for African-American females. Like i mentioned in the second post numerous females singers have credited her for "opening that door". And yes ur right about the modeling part I had almost forgot about that.

@Caitsith.Zahrah - Do u understand the concept of Top40 popular music versus r&b/soul/disco/"motown"/blues. Also i had asked are u a resident of the US or a foreign country? u didn't answer that, if u did it wasn't a direct answer or in English. im curious. Reason i ask. Im curious why someone who lacks US "creds" is so critical of US state policies, and so critical of US icons. Curious is all.

he did answer your question, he said he was Belgian.

Edit: he also went on to say something about having a problem with Germans and asking if they know more about pop culture than europeans. im assuming this question is directed at you but my German is still sketchy.
