Occasionally my laptop will make this horrendous *** loud whirring noise, as soon as I reboot it though it goes away. I suspect it would be the fan, but my fan still runs fine. It'll just randomly decide to go apeshit and as soon as I reboot it runs normal.

Could be the Hard drive. Does it make clicking sounds at all?

Could be your optical drive on the fritz if that's applicable.
I know mine would randomly whirr up to full speed which made a horrible noise for no reason.

The sound it makes sounds like if I stuck a copper wire into my fan and it repeatedly hit it. But when it makes that sound, it heats up quick. As soon as I reboot though, it runs smooth as if nothing happened at all.

Yeah I'm afraid to leave it on when it makes that noise because I have no *** idea what it is.

Has it been dropped or shunted at all? Anything that could have dislodged the motor slightly?

Nope, my laptop has never been dropped. In fact, it hasn't even left my desk in like 8 months.

Well without hearing the sound I'd narrow it down to three possibilities.

1) The HDD is burning out
2) There's an issue causing the fan to run faster
3) The Optical drive is randomly booting up for no reason.

Next time it happens put your ear next to the disk drive and see if it sounds like it's coming from there.

My laptop is only two years old, give or take. And I'm not too hardware savvy at all, but if you mean disk drive being where I pop in the CDs, it's not that.

Well I would say it's a wire just hitting the fan slightly, but if a reboot fixes it, then obviously that's not the case.

I'm guessing there's an issue making then fan run too hard. Any new software installed recently?

Best bet would be the fan then, it probably just needs cleaning out

Assuming your warranty is already void, it might be worth checking internal configuration to assure everything is snug and excess wire or drape-age isn't interfering with your fan.
I know when my molex wires drifted into my fan over time it sounded awful D:
Nothing a few zip ties couldn't fix though.

If that was the case, wouldn't it make the noise all the time instead of randomly, and then goes away after a reboot?

Could be the fan itself now that I think about it.
My ancient PC built in 2000, after several years of use made horrific fan whirring noise upon startup but eventually dissipated as it idled. I wonder if you have a similar circumstance but rather occurs after idling a certain amount of time and is remedied by a reboot.

I dunno, I'm not very hardware savvy at all. And god knows if I take it to a shop they'll just completely *** everything up.

Have you sat it out and let the whirring come to its own terms and end or does it go on indefinitely until you restart?
It seems you take good care of your laptop, so it shouldn't be a direct threat to your hardware until we know more.

I shut it down immediately, I don't hold the power button though, I close from the startup menu. I don't wanna leave it on if I don't know what the deal is with it.

Start here and check for bad sectors and/or writing and reading errors.
Also play it safe and backup important stuff to an external drive.

As far as my technical ability with laptops goes, if it stops working, it's broken >_>

Do you have any IT/ComputerRepair/ComputerorElectricalEngineer type friends?

No, and unfortunately the closest place with any kind of repair place is Houston, 45 minute drive on a good day.

Not really, just like minded geek friends; one of which is A+ certified, but that won't go very far unfortunately.
I'll ask him about it, but keep us posted here and we can hopefully open the case further with more info as it comes.

Not sure why I answered that question as if it were intended for me.

It doesn't happen often either, but this is about the 4th or 5th time in about 3 or so months.

It could be related to your laptop overheating or something?
