Since it is possible to level from 30-85 in a few days, is there a point to doing the old af1 quests?

Do any of them make a difference in the story lines? Or are any of them gear still worth it, like SAM hands?

Some of the gear is situationally useful such as RDM body, blm gloves etc. SAM AF head is good, hands suck. The story for them all pretty much suck except the newer jobs like BLU and TOAU+ WOTG

BLU AF body and gloves are still good to have. DRK helm for souleater, COR hat for quick draw. Some are still worthwhile.

That's another interesting point, I am noticing that no one is lotting on af+1 items. Isn't some of the af+1 still very useful? They are much cheaper to upgrade now, kind of like the relic+1 is heading to.

BRD hands+1 are still useful, and AF legs +1 are useful if you don't have BRD AF3 legs +1 (or +2)

I wouldn't call 'em dead across the board, since at least some of them are useful macro pieces.

Stories aren't all great, but at 85 doing the quests is pretty trivial. IMO, may as well do 'em just 'cause. Can always store the set when you're done.

Ninja body if you capped ACC tho i dont used it, ninja feet for night time, same for NMS ninja legs, RNG body if your cheap and can get alturnitives. The Sam Nin Mnk storylines are OK~ but not prinze winning.

Any macro augment or +skill piece is typically good, ie: RDM/BLM bodies. Rest of the stuff is really only useful for that level sadly.

MNK is only ever good for macro, I swear to god the amount of MNK's I saw full timing AF @ 75 made me a sad panda.

Same as BRD, the amount of BRD's full timing AF body, feet and head was annoying.

There is no alternative to Drachen Armet for Healing Breath trigger.

Drachen Brais are still best in slot for Healing Breath potency too unless I've missed something.

NIN AF body is their ultimate TP body in a strong TP setup unless I'm missing something.

No they're not anymore dead now, than the were before. They're not useful for every job, but they're useful for some. That's how it always works. Everything is situational.

I always get the af for every job I level, even if only to put it in storage. Some of it is good for its level, and some of it is situation-ally good forever. It's nice to have the sets stored so they aren't taking up inventory room on those occasions when you are not using them. It's not like the quests to get them are that hard or time consuming, anyways.

DRK AF head- Dark magic macro piece.

DRK AF body- Enfeebling magic macro piece (although Corselet would be better, if you had that)

And if you had the inventory space for it...

DRK AF hands- Weaponbash macro piece (for +10 dmg when you weaponbash.)

DRK AF feet- Arcane circle macro piece (for +30 seconds duration for arcane circle when fighting arcana)

That being said, DRK AF head is the most useful for obvious reasons. No other head piece gives more Dark magic skill, currently.

Well I guess my point is more that most of the armor wont really increase damage output as much as other gear other gear out there. So why spend all the time to get the af armor if its just going to be used for 1 job ability once every 5 minutes or so. This really comes into play with how SE is expanding the amount of gear we need to collect for each job, like 1-4 magian weapons, AF3, job specific accessories, etc...

I don't think they intended for everyone to get every possible useful weapon from magian trials.

Legs aren't really useful either. Errant is better for healing, phalanx and stoneskin can be capped pretty much naked anyways, and whms can do much better barspells plus the legs would only add what another 3 resist? They are however kinda sexy

For the trigger upgrade, no. But other pieces, like the Saurian Helm, scale up how much it heals for.

I still prefer my Drachen Armet.
I hope you realize you can use both... so there is no need to prefer one over the other. And I believe af2 head is better than saurian for HB

Do the quests for the riveting and thought-provoking storylines. Only in FFXI will have you searching tiny boxes for stuffed corpses so you can get a ghost's hat.
