had to reformat my computer so i lost ffxi and i didnt feel like doing hours of updates
figured i should stop playing so i did and didnt really miss it since

Delete your character, then give your HDD/FFXI CDs to your local garbage collector when he comes around.

Need to find yourself a hobby. When I decided to stop playing, I decided to start programming for fun. This is one of the many different things I made :D
Like others have said, play other games, RPGs, whatever. Just find stuff to fill your time. I really didn't even care anymore after about a month myself. However, like most others I eventually caved and came back. :/

Thats what I had to do to quit too >< I snapped my 360 FFXI discs then deleted my character on the laptop then un-installed everything...
After I'd done it all i kinda sat there for a long time remembering all the good times and how much effort i'd put into the game and how much life i wasted doing nothing to benefit my life in any way shape or form, and it was pretty depressing to think how many RL things i had 'put off' over the years and how much i had sacrificed for this stupid *** game, albeit I miss it still and probably will for a while, but every day gets easier (I was addicted quite bad ><) and soon enough ill stop thinking bout it much at all, just hang in there, take your mind off it by playing other games that AREN'T MMO's ^^
I still -want- to play, but after the billionth monthly account suspension due to their bat-***stupid visa issues...i just decided *** it, I'm not getting on the phone with some stupid moron like I do every month to ask why my account was suspended when I'm legit verified by visa.
So I guess find something about the whole experience, like maybe long updates, visa issues, etc...and focus on it so you don't bother to deal with it xD

Get a cardboard box and label it sandy.
Walk 35 minutes and place a box on the ground labeled windy.
Now walk for 35 minutes to get from sandy to windy. No movement speed either!
Alternatively you can place a box of a nation of your choice. Then walk 20ish minutes to an interstate and place a box on the other side and say you are walking to jueno for the first time. Try not to get aggroed too.

Because they've quit and know what it takes to stop playing the game? When did posting on a forum require playing the game? I lurk forums while I'm compiling code at work, cause it requires the most minute amount of attention to press the F5 button on the main page. And what if you enjoy life by chatting and posting with you friends (and enemies) you've made over the past years?
