Ive noticed this. I cant list a female singer that I actually like...they either try and sound like the male bands (screaming and shiznit) or they sound to pop-ish.

Everytime Evanescense, Flyleaf, In this Moment or Haelstorm come on the radio I change the channel lol.

Even if I like a song by one...like Flyleafs new song Again is ok..I usually end up disliking it later. Flyleaf is kinda really almost too preachy for me.

Lacuna Coil isnt so bad but I only listen to them in a car. If I decided to listen to them regularly Im afraid Id get bored of them.

So a ton of videos without any opinions on topic? lol Probably better since it seems kind of pointless, really. I think male leads are just more prevalent given the time line most 20-somethings follow musically between the 70, 80s, 90s and 00s! Plus the largest chunk of female vocalists seem to belong to pop genres which everyone gets around to hating in their 20s anyway (YES?).

ALSO WHERE'S THE CAT POWER? Nope, not even going to post a video now.

Alsoalso, wth Chster, VersaEmerge is a local band! lol

Trudat

When I was little it was all about "GIRL POWER!1" and Spice Girls and that song "Torn" and "Jellyhead" and "Dont speak" were all the cool things to listen to on my casset tapes.

but Ill be darned if I can hang around pop music before exploding.

I think the majority of the actually-can-sing good female singers are probably singing country music. Which is sad because country for female singers is about as bad as pop music...and I cant listen to it.

If theres a song by a female artist that I listen to or own on CD then its going to be on a soundtrack for something (glee and moulin rouge!)

Im with Chster tbh most my taste in music is underground also although not all some popular bands grab my attention now & then but mainly the stuff i like is Independant label..So many "popular" bands there debut Stuff is awesome they sign BIG record deals then the record comapanys want them to spit out 2 albums per year cos its in there contract or w/e in my opinion they lose there creativity i never stick with a band long till i get bored with the drizzle they release..I get bored fast & move on!...Plus i dont like bands everyone else likes..I prefer to be different cos im strange like that!.

P.S this is a little of topic from my original post.

I tend to prefer male vocalists, just because their voices can be a lot more soothing to me and I like to play my music loud. Higher pitched voices seem to make my ears ring.

I do however like Kerli Koiv, and any song by Armin Van Buurin with a female vocalist. I'm also loving "Tracking Treasure Down" by Gabriel and Dresden, but I wouldn't really consider those all 'bands' just female vocalists.

I just thought of another female led band I do like though, Metric.

Tarja can rock it better than Lacuna.

Nightwish, both past and present. They used to have a lead named Tarja, she's on her own now and still makes some good stuff. Now they have a lead named Annette.

BEP is pop and while No Doubt was a sub-genre of rock(Ska, I think) most of their later stuff was undeniably pop(or at the very least pop-rock).

I actually prefer female vocalists over male. I think it has to do with my choice genre of music. I'm into gothic "metal" (if you can call it metal). Not many males can pull it off. Most of them make it sound too heavy and completely forget about the fact it should be beautiful as well. My favorite band is Nightwish.

Nightwish w/ Tarja:

Nightwish w/ Anette

probably because theres about over 9000 (95%) male lead singers (of all bands evar) and like 5% female? :|

I'm typically more prone to male singers, as I dont really like what most women write/sing about (nothing against them)... Its just the way it is for me >.>. Besides, I tend to like harder music, and it sounds funny to me to hear a woman scream like that. (hurhur thats what she said) That being said, I do like some of them but its rare, and I dont think anyone can really say "HAHA ALL GUY SINGERS ARE BESTESTER THEN THE GIRLS LOL" or w/ever, because its all a matter of opinion.

For some reason that sounds Swedish to me <_< I can't say I have know of any Swedish music besides ABBA, which it sounds nothing like, and it's in English, but yeah... Anyway <_<

The images in the videos when I first looked at them reminded me a lot of Evanescence though. Fair bit different, not exactly what I'd call my favourite music, but it's pretty decent. They have a few very different tracks actually, My Immortal (third one) is really quite beautiful, and a counterpoint to a lot of their other tracks:

To answer the original post, I think these quotes nailed it.

Female singers are judged more harshly than males. A male can just scream throughout a whole album and be considered a genius. If a female does that, it's considered annoying.

No, I'm not pulling this whole feminist/females get bad treatment thing. It's kind of nice the music industry already seperates the great female singers from the shitty ones for me. I don't have to waste time/money on crappy albums or concerts.
