When to use souleater.

heeelp :) I'm not a DRK, but from what I understand, save it for finishing the mob off, else you'll be eating dirt.

I don't trust healers to heal me after I use it, because as I was leveling they didn't. So I don't use it if I don't know the healer. When I was a healer in a pt I'd recommend not to unless it absolutely needs to be used or you have Drain and Drain II ready. I don't heal people that burn HP when not needed.
When you're 75 in a really good LS, there are these things called Zergs. Lots of Bard songs will be played, you'll have haste, and be equipped with HP+ gear, haste% gear and a multihit weapon. You will then proceed to use Blood Weapon and Soul Eater in conjunction and beat the crap out of a hard monster with a Kracken Club, Merc. Kris or Octave Club (if you're 72).
...Otherwise maybe use it if you have a Powerleveler for your party? I hate it when DRKs use Soul Eater in exps as a career support-job character. :x At 60 DRK, you should have it.
Best to use it at 20% of mob. Most of the time I save my TP just for souleater>>Gil. So by the time it comes back each time you'll have 300tp. So your damage should easily be 900-1100, depending on your equip. Use souleater whenever possible. j/k I wish I could say this. Although I somehow used souleater almost fulltime until I was around lvl 55 DRK... lmao To this day I'm still not sure how people let me do that without knowing it was horribly nubish? Granted if I hadn't used it, my gear was horrible at the time, so I would've done crap damage and missed all the time. Although that was also before absorb spells, and the 2-handed update..
I don't find much of a need for it normally. It's nice if you want to do extra damage on ws's once in a while and the healer isn't having any mp problems. Also, in "OHSHITINEEDTOKILLTHISNAO!!!1" moments. I might combine that with Blood Weapon to do a bit more damage. I have used souleater before if I really needed to take hate for some reason. Thats occasionally useful. But then I haven't been main DRK for a year or so. So these are just the times I would use it. I also haven't done DRK endgame much so there could be better times to use it then. Sylph.Mordred

I personally use it only during WS ( I turn it off right after the WS of course) when ever I feel its appropriate.
I mean by that when the healer isn't low on mp or busy and that I won't steal hate from the tank to waste too much mp. Its something that comes with experience to know when and when not to use it. Always use at the start of a fight when its ready.
lol... Use it ONLY when you have a PL! I love going Sam/Drk w/ Soboro on Colibri at 60... So much damage if you have C3/C4 being spammed on you. lol
thanks everyone, got a good idea about it now :)

This is the only time a DRK should EVER use Souleater, unless ***goes south and the mob needs to die ASAP. Also on Zergs like Kirin, Bv2, and in endgame events. Dumb DRK's turn it on and leave it on, creating an MP sponge that no mage likes. Use Souleater, WS, click it off, save yourself a headache, and save MP for the chains. I only use it for weaponskills, mainly Guillotine though. I have a macro where I turn on souleater, use the WS, then I'll turn it off. I also have Muted Souls merit, so I generally don't take hate when I use it in end-game situations, while still doing a massive amount of damage. Other than that...not really. Never melee with it, because you'll be dead, or the mage will be dead trying to keep up with healing you. To sum it up...WS onry pretty much.
I use it semi-regularly in parties (only drk56), but only ever when the mob is at low health so all i get in is a ws and a hit or two, and usually by the time the other mob is there it's either worn off or about to be in like 2 seconds. I've never had any complaints, and i always use drain right after the ws. Also having a macro along the lines of "{Alertness} {Souleater} {Alertness}" helps so the healer knows that you are taking a bunch of damage shortly.
What if you have tp at 100+ but its start of fight? use it then or end of fights + ws onry?
If you use souleater at the start of the fight you most likely will be tanking it the entire fight or dead really quick. I was being a smartass earlier, but honestly never use souleater until the mob is ~33% HP left.
Every time recast is back up.
On a less sarcastic note, during leveling I noticed it was actually advantageous to use SE to TP and not for WS as it spread the hate accumulation out. This of course works even better once you gain access to Drain 2 and have a good mage that knows to keep you at full HP every swing. In better Parties, and later on in your DRK days, you can stack SE alongside Guillotine for insane numbers. Otherwise use with discretion keeping in mind these simple things: 1.How well does the tank keep hate during large hate spikes? 2.How efficiently and effectively are the mages keeping everyone healed? 3.Is using SE at this time going to be productive or counterproductive to our goals (IE: will it net more or less xp/hr, and will it help kill the mob, or help wipe the party/alliance)? 4.Is using SE going to piss off a crucial member of the party because of my untimely or excessive use? Learn to guage hate and don't take it when using it in xp...

I'm really surprised no-one commented on storing tp to 300 earlier <_<
Don't do it. Ever. On any job. Period. Edit: Well... unless you're storing tp before engaging an NM. when u feel like death warping.
1. With blood weapon.
2. If you need to draw emnity from a PT member who is in danger. 3. As a buff for a finishing WS (preferably in emergencies, otherwise your sapping mage MP unnecessarily). Remora.Laphine

my experience with drk was 1-40 and i was really aggressive with souleater and last resort. Then again i had a great pld to back it up.
Anyway, if you time your souleater and last resort with your pld sentinel you should be fine. For nin tanks, the 40-50 lvl range is the only place i can see them holding that (and if they elemental wheel). After guillotine things change i would say, and no tank can hold hate from the abilities + ws lol. But if you get a smart tank they will at least use the hp you lost to get hate. regardless of when you use them, never use them at the same time
alternate them as necessary souleater stacks with elemental ws's like nightmare scythe right? And would u say nightmare scythe is better than slice?
Use it when you have Ridill and going to use Blood weapon after it. FUN

ridill sucks *** for zerging even m kris is better
I'm sure most DRK's know this, you basically use it in a good party period.
You really dont loose all that much health as most people think. I, an my friend both tested it. He hit over 1200, an lost 300hp. Thats not alot, specially if you kill off the mob at 25%. I used it 50% of mob an pulled hate of course. But you have to use common sense to play a DRK. Most people would disagree, but who cares? |
