Its super far from The Last of Us, its not an action game, its more like a story telling game and first 2 parts were very successful.

So Top 3 financial failures by SquareEnix are:

1. 'Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within' movie
2. 'Marvel's Avengers' game

I can't think of another time they screwed up so badly. Maybe 14's 1.0 launch needing a giant overhaul??? Thoughts?

I'm not into them, but Life is Strange is nothing like Last of Us and has a sizeable fan base.


I wouldn't put Marvel's Avengers in even the same league as the losses incurred by Spirits Within or FFXIV 1.0.

Well, I wish them well, I suppose. I know none of these games are really made at/for people like me. They direct their nostalgia rays my way when they include cameo's from old FF games in things or remake games for current gen consoles.

Still hoping for Final Fantasy VI to get some love one day. The iOS / tablet FFVI has such a clunky battle UI (but it is nice seeing enemies in HD). Thankfully the mod community has made patches that help fix it up.

Anyway, as long as some of these games bring in some money so we can get some devs to work on our spaghetti code 19 year old game eventually, I'll be happy, I guess. I have heard bad things about this 'Marvel's Avengers' game costing them a lot though so... ugh.

I miss the glory days of Squaresoft and Enix pushing each other to out-do each other.

'Spirits Within' always felt like a solid idea just one executed a few years too early.

There was a small window where such a concept could have worked, when the quality would have been better and the demand for that genre was larger, at least in the States.

You've disregarded Balan Wonderworld, but this is a direct sequel to FFXI: Seekers of Adoulin, following Balamor to a new nightmare dimension he rules over, tormenting children who can't pronounce his name.

The money lost on Avengers sucks but it isn't going to destroy them. They had a very good year overall.

The issue with Avengers isn't the money lost, it's possibly losing the partnership with Disney that they are worried about.

Disney get a cut of profits and micro-transactions and also there is damage to the brand by having an unpopular game.

It's nothing like the brand degradation that FFXIV 1.0 caused, and wasn't able to be repaired until years later.

Yeah but I meant the damage to Disney and Marvel.

The issue with that marvel game was the stupid addition of random woman with big hands. People want to play as the characters, not that.

Ms. Marvel (whose not just some "random character") was not the issue and you did get to play as the other characters? lol



I will say that I haven't played it beyond the demo, so I don't know what the full-breakdown is in terms of playtime, but it's my understanding that the game's story is pretty competent.
