American culture and philosophy is anathema to the Progressive ideology. Individual responsibility, freedom of choice, freedom of association, freedom of expression, the concept of these things become repulsive to those who desire absolute power and the authority to architect society from the top down.

If the unwashed masses are allowed to choose what to do, they may chose incorrectly. If they are allowed to choose who to associate with, they may chose incorrectly. If those poor unenlightened are allowed to choose what to express, they could express the wrong things or worse, corrupt others with their heretical expressions. They need to be shepherded. guided in what to think, what to say, what to believe, what to do. Only the enlightened Progressive faithful are equipped to handle this most important task. Whom else must we entrust to the guidance of the human race?

If that seems hyperbole, it's not. That is actually what those on the left believe, that they are the only ones capable of guiding all of humanity and that anyone who opposes them is doing so at the great cost of human progress.
