Currently in the market for a new build. Aware of the ongoing issues with the Nvidia Optimus system on laptops and the Radeon RX series respective inabilities to run FFXI (source: not self tested, word of mouth and some research). Does anyone have any experience with the following desktop video cards?

- Nvidia Geforce GTX 970, 980, 1060, 1070 and 1080?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

If some of the above cards are able to run FFXI on laptops without issues, please let me know as well.

Thanks!

All of those could run FFXI on a laptop or desktop without any issues, and would be way overkill.

If you're worried about optimus, that could happen with any video card. You just have to configure it properly so it uses your video card.

I had a PC from 2002 that could run FFXI. I had a 128 MB video card in it. No problems running it at all. It was Nvidia also for reference.

While I'm fully aware that the capabilities of those cards are more than enough to run the game, I am mostly concerned about Nvidia Optimus on laptops and its current impossibility to bypass (per my research).I dont believe the same issue exists for Desktop video cards which is why I'm requesting insight since Im not 100%. Thanks for the responses so far nonetheless.

The issue with the laptops is typically the dual video card features which most don't know how to or have a limited system and are unable to disable the integrated video to fully utilize the dedicated video. Some have issues with the full cards, most don't.

The 3gb GTX1060 is incredible bang/buck right now. If I was building a system that I was concerned about budget, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 1060.

Guess I should have read your post better...lol I stand by what I said tho. The 1060 is epic :-)

I have a GTX980ti and I've never had one issue with playing FFXI. I dualbox two FFXI accounts and never shut them off when I play other games.

Currently running
AMD8350 (I know, needs an upgrade)
980ti
Windows 7 Ultimate
