Kaboom! A Guide for Black Mage

So I’ve never written a guide and I don’t claim to be an expert, but I wanted to try and write out a guide for Black Mage. I’ve always really enjoyed the job and it is one of the jobs that (sadly) didn’t have a guide for it until now.

I will try and keep this updated as much as I can. Gear wise, I will try to keep a low/mid/high tier sets up.

As I am only human, there may be mistakes within this guide or changes that may need to be made. Feel free to send me a PM, reply, discuss, debate, make suggestions, etc. I will add and change things as needed.

The Basics

Skill Caps

Will add this part in soon.

Job Traits

Magic Attack Bonus – Black mages get bonuses to their MAB at levels 10, 30, 50, 70, 84, and 91. Magic attack bonus is simply the way it sounds – it increases the power of magic spells. As a job trait these bonuses are always active.

Clear Mind – Black mages get the Clear Mind trait at levels 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75. Clear mind increases the amount of MP you’re character recovers while resting.

Conserve MP – Gained at level 20. Occasionally reduces a spells MP cost.

Magic Burst Bonus – Gained at level 45, 58, 71, 81, and 97. So what is a magic burst? During combat each skill chain has an opportunity to magic burst. Similar to completing a skill chain, a black mage’s spell must land after the animation for the skill chain has been completed. This takes careful timing and the “when to begin casting” will differ from person to person based on spell, fast cast, etc. Magic burst greatly increases magic accuracy and damage. More then one magic burst can happen at the same time (assuming that each caster is using the correct element). The chart for skill chains and the element needed to magic burst can be found here.

Elemental Celerity – Acquired at level 50 and 90. Quickens elemental spellcasting.

Occult Acumen – Acquired at level 85. Grants the caster a TP bonus when dealing damage with elemental or dark magic.

Elemental Seal Recast (Merit) - Each level of this enhancement decreases the recast time of Elemental Seal by 20 seconds, to a minimum recast time of 8 minutes, 20 seconds.

Magic Potency (Merit) - Each level of this enhancement provides +2 Magic Attack Bonus to the associated elements' damage, up to a maximum of +10 when the element is merited five times. 6 of the 8 elements may be chosen for individual upgrading: fire, ice, wind, earth, lightning, and water. However, because the max combo for group 1 merits is 10 total, only two elements can be fully upgraded to maximum potency.

Job Abilities

Manafont – Manafont is a Black Mage’s one hour ability. When active, the MP cost of all magic is reduced to zero, allowing spells to be freely cast as long as recast timers permit. When active, the casting of any type of spell becomes uninterruptible by melee damage, an effect that is normally limited only to Songs. Movement, along with Stun, Sleep, Silence, and other such debilitating status effects that halt spellcasting may still cause interruptions.

Elemental Seal – Level 15. When activated, greatly increases the chance that user's next spell will not be resisted.

Mana Wall – Level 76. Allows you to take damage with MP & reduces damage taken by 50%. (100 Damage taken takes 50 mp away instead of 100 hp)

Enmity Douse – Level 87. Reduces the target's enmity towards you. There is a 10 minute recast. Use wisely.

Manawell – Level 95. Eliminates the cost of the next magic spell the target casts.

Equipment

Weapons

- last updated 2013.
Laevateinn - The mythic staff had been, at least in my opinion, the most powerful staff available to BLM. With the newest update this has currently changed...But hopefully the developers will raise the R/E/Ms for all weapons...Though this may just be my opinion.

Claustrum - level 99 Relic staff.

Hvergelmir - level 99 Empyrean staff.

Chatoyant Staff - This staff is a very basic well rounded staff. "Iridescence" adds an additional possible weather proc for 10% damage bonus. Iridescence can proc with or without normal weather bonus procs, significantly increasing the chance of a 10% bonus proc, and also making a 20% bonus proc possible. Elemental Obis will force the combined Iridescence/Weather proc. Iridescence has no effect on day potency bonus/procs. Has the following hidden effects: All elements: Magic Potency +15%, All elements: Magic Accuracy +30, & All elements: Avatar and spirit perpetuation cost -3.

Soothsayer Staff - One of the new released staffs. This one is supposedly from Delve.

Antinian Staff +1 - One of the new staffs available. Bought off the AH / Craftable.

Magian Trials - There are trials specific to each element through the magian staff trials. Rewards include casting time down, magic accuracy, and magic damage. You can check the trials and rewards here

Below sets were submitted by the awesome Ramzus =D

HQ: Access to all the best pieces in the game

NQ: Access to all endgame content pre-Reisenjima T3

Standard: Access to everything pre-Ru'Aun T3

Low Quality: Have dabbled a bit in Ru'Aun (i.e. Warders/T1s) but nothing past that.

Starter: Haven't done much outside of Skirmish

... is there a way to change the topic title? I would feel bad if the BLM guide was always called "In Progress" :(

@ Josiahfk – Ty for the additions to the subjob info. I am planning on doing an MDT and PDT set, I am just not there yet. I have a lot of sets I plan to put up still =D
Also going to put in skill caps somewhere.
I had considered adding BLM solo guides, but sadly I think everyone just aby burns everything these days.
Curing is also a set I’m planning on including :D

High-Tier Dark magic set is the same as your high-tier enfeebling.

Rubeus Boots over Avocat Pigaches in mid-tier enfeebling maybe? If Nares is considered mid-tier, surely Rubeus is as well.
Though it's a random augment, Literae sabots can get up to +5 skill and 1-3 Macc as well.

Aswang Sash for Low and Mid-Tier nuke. Both it and Searing can be purchased on AH, and Aswang is better overall.
Would Romanus cape ever be a better option compared to searing? It's a loss of 1 mab for 4Int, though it does have that addle effect on it.

Don't forget to list BRD as a subjob for abyssea procing threnodies.

Also some new staves for nuking are atinian staff/atinian staff +1 and lehbrailg. Lehbrailg can be augmented with an additional MAB26-30 (possibly more until we find out more) and comes from Skirmish.

For high tier enfeebling I'd suggest Rubeus Boots too. With hands and feet you lose 2 enfeebling skill but you get +4 fast cast from set bonus, handy for sleeps.

Also I'd include a fast cast set to precast nukes in. Can be extremely handy if you're under a time crunch.

On Romanus, iirc it's never a very good cape to use because of the addle effect. Nice for MAB based WS's though!

I do intend to add Obis/Twilight cape listed somewhere and their benefits I just haven't gotten around to adding it in. Still have 6-7 sets to work out and post up, with half of them having low/mid/high. Trying to get those parts done at the moment. No worries XD

ItemSet 299338

Fast Cast if you need one

There are a few changes in gear, but they're relatively all the same value
  • Repartie -> Magavan

  • Orvail -> Fea's

  • Nares -> Hyaline

  • Anhur -> Eirene's

Can also set up Rubeus pieces depending on what you want to carry/have room for. I try to steer away from Occ. quickens pieces because I am a baby and they annoy me (I guess that counts for Witful as well, but that also has a straight FC+3) Even so there are only a few pieces to use

  • Impatiens

  • Witful Belt

  • Veneficium Ring

  • Ogapepo Cape(+1)

AF3+2 Hat for Elemental Casting uhhhhhhhh

Am I missing something? I don't obviously expect everyone to carry all that gear (or have it like the staff that just came out), but those are most all of the FC choices

I'm glad to finally see a BLM guide.

I just hope BLM damage becomes relevant again sometime. New DD weapons really kill any reason to bring a blm anywhere other than to proc stuff.

Mp whilst resting should be wivre hairpin or Coif over nares head, but keeping the body over 2 tick refresh is ok, not worth the inv space imo however.

Is Morri body 1 tick Mp or 2? With the Staff/grip combo I have above you can get 2 tics versus the 1 from owleyes (when the latents are active, of course).

If PDT/MDT are goal sets, then might as well add Defending ring into MDT+Shadow Ring, or at least Shadow Ring in place of Merman's

Also, Morrigan is 2

edit:

ItemSet 299365

a tad over the 50% mark assuming only Shell II from sub and a load of MDB everywhere else

Using that staff would be kind of pointless since you need the weapon drawn, and Moonshade Earring is active while the weapon isn't drawn, so it's not really doing anything at all.
