That total memory is the combination of your video cards dedicated memory and the shared memory from your RAM. Your RAM gives part of itself to your graphics card to aide in the rendering of images. Hence why it says Aprox. Total Memory. Your card only has 2gb of dedicated memory, and the rest is borrowed from your RAM.

Dedicated video memory is memory on the video card itself. Shared memory is part of your system's RAM that is "given to" the video card for use when it needs to process images. Since dedicated memory is on the card, the chips and the bus to access it are under the card's control, so access is typically much faster and at a higher bandwidth. For shared memory, the card has to use the (shared) system bus and the normal system RAM chips, which increase access time (a lot, typically).

If an image is too large to fit in the onboard video memory, the card will use system memory as well. Since the speed is dictated by the slowest subsystem, this will almost negate the benefits of onboard memory. So you should try to have as much onboard memory as you can, if you are using applications that require fast rendering e.g. games, graphics etc.

You can easily compute your video memory requirements like this: if you want to run at 1024x768 resolution with a color depth of 32 bits per pixel, one frame needs (32/8)*768KB=3MB of memory. To store a second's worth of rendered frames at 60 frames per second, you would need 180MB. And so on.

Are you sure you're not mistaking VRAM with RAM? Your GPU only has 2 GB and that's all you're gonna get; even in SLI.

the 4gb is coming directly from my GPU (Yes VRAM) now this IS being reported from Windows so who the *** knows lol.
