Localization errors
The purpose of this thread is to have a central location to report "Localization Errors", A.K.A. Typos, that exist in the English client of Final Fantasy XI. There is a localization subforum on the official forum, but given that many players are banned from the OF, we need somewhere else to report these.

As an example, the most common localization error are statistics that are missing from pieces of equipment on the English client, but are present in the Japanese client.

Please post a reply to this thread if there is an error in-game, especially on equipment statistics, that is not in the OP below. I will keep the OP up to date after verifying reports. Once we get a good sized list going, I will report them on the official forum as a community representative recommended to me. Maybe we will be surprised and they will keep an eye on this thread for us.

Very important errors
If an error is listed here, it has not yet been addressed. Reported errors that have been fixed are moved down to the bottom of this post and crossed off.

The errors in this section should be addressed immediately. Some examples include statistics that do not match the Japanese client, names that do not match in a players inventory and in the log, and even pertinent information causing an item not to work if it is not known.

Armor Errors

Armor Names

  • Heath. Flanchard +3 (ID: 23628)
An erroneous "s" was added to the item name during the February 2023 update. It should be removed.

Armor Descriptions

  • All Augmented Red Mage Relic Armor (Duelist +2 Augmented and Vitiation pieces) have an augment that reads inconsistent with other job's relic augmented gear. The wording on the augments is very odd and ambiguous. The augment in question is

    "Enfeebling Magic duration"
    "Magic Accuracy"

These effects should read like below to match other Relic JSE augments, and cause less confusion

    Adds Enfeebling Magic duration effect
    Adds Magic Accuracy effect

  • Hattori Kyahn +2 (ID: 23365)
    Hattori Kyahn +3 (ID: 23700)
    Maculele Tights +2 (ID: 23304)
    Maculele Tights +3 (ID: 23639)

The above items have the stat "Critical Parry" on them, and they should be "Tactical Parry" to match everything else.

Weapon Errors

Weapon Names

  • No reported errors active/All reported errors fixed!

Weapon Descriptions

  • No reported errors active/All reported errors fixed!

General Item Errors

General Item Name Errors

  • H.Q. Pugil Scales (ID: 1587) share a name very similar to H.Q. Pugil Scale (ID: 3270)

The former is for Abyssea, the later is a much older item for Synthesis.

General Item Description Errors

  • No reported errors active/All reported errors fixed!

Usable Items

Item Name Errors

  • No reported errors active/All reported errors fixed!

Item Description Errors

  • Unlike other Tinctures, E. Tincture (FrB) (ID: 5526) English description doesn't explain what it does. Its Japanese description says that it temporarily reduces enmity.

Also, it is named "Fragrant Breeze Budtincture" while everything else is f"{locus name} tincture". Looks to me like they were one character short and just combined the words, which may not have been intentional.

Dialogue Tables

Quests

  • Quest: Trial by Ice - Gulmama in Northern Sandy says "The improved tuning fork was used by that rougue...?" for some reason, which should instead be "rogue"

    DAT: ROM/25/40.DAT, Line 72764

  • In Arrapago Reef, at the beginning of the mission "The Seagull Phratrie", Zweeha erroneously states "I was thinking she could help with the rather impossible task that Mutihb gave Aznahf." even if the gender of your character is male...If your character is female, they will call you "he". In the dialogue .DAT files the gender choices are always [he/she], but for this line they are flipped and display as [she/he], causing this issue.

    DAT: ROM4/0/127.DAT, Line 58089

  • Dialogue option during Voracious Resurgence mission 4-3 in Wajoam Woodlands reads "How do you respond?" and the last selection option reads "Thep ower of the blue" but it should be "The power of the blue"

    DAT: ROM4/0/124.DAT, Line 57348

  • During the Assault "Saving Private Ryaaf", the NPC Rhagmakah says his name is Balarahb. When speaking to the NPC Balarahb, he mentions that I had spoke to Balarahb already. Looks like those 2 NPCs have their names flipped around.

Battle Log

  • When you use a Blood pact: Rage that heals the target, the chat message instead show that the healed is the actor of the blood pact.
Example: Ramuh uses Volt Strike. Ramuh recovers 15634 HP.
    Note: Probably affects all pets

  • Ballista Marshall mentions there being chevron for each of the 20 jobs, run and geo also had them added so it should say 22 now

  • the message you get when entering certain content like reives where trusts can be summoned during combat.

    It says:
"Alter egos may be used here without any effect on enmity."

    It should say:
"Alter egos may be used here regardless of enmity."

  • If you speak to Coelestrox in Reisenjima repeatedly while a +3 Artifact reforge is in progress, you will eventually be asked if you want to cancel the process. The resulting dialogue box contains a punctuation typo ("/" should be "." or possibly "!").

    DAT: ROM/342/85.DAT, Line 47024

  • AMAN Trove: The "belligerent bang" message is: "You hear a belligerent bang from one of the remaining treasure chest."

However, "chest" is obviously plural in this message and it should be: "You hear a belligerent bang from one of the remaining treasure chests."

  • If you look at Fish Ranking in Selbina, the text is:

"Chenon : Ranking results may be viewed for 1hour, 5 minutes (Earth time)."

Which is missing a space between 1 and hour.

  • The 700 Deed reward (Microcosmic Orb) appears as "Microcosmic Orb X5" in the AMAN Validator menu in all locations.

  • When you enter Sortie, one of the messages sent is

    Quote:
    Sortie said:
Your shiny Ra'Kaznarian plate loses is potency and transforms into a dull Ra'Kaznarian plate.
    should be "its potency"

  • Reisenjima goblin Emporox has an option "Hear about Emporox's pot." The result of selecting it is a transaction where Emporox takes 100 Eschan Beads and gives you a 72 hour "Emporox's Gift" buff, which is completely unrelated to the text "Hear about Emporox's Pot". Her menu tree also has "Hear about various explanations.", which has a bottom option of "Emporox's...pot?" that actually gives an explanation of what the buff does. So two proposed changes:
    1. Rename "Emporox's Gift" to "Emporox's Pot" to be consistent with the dialogue.
    2. Switch "Hear about Emporox's pot." to be "I would like Emporox's Pot." analogous to the below "I would like an Emporox's ring."

Inconsistency Errors
The following errors exist across pieces or "sets" of armor. Examples include naming inconsistencies, and especially different item description inconsistencies. These should be fixed for English player's convenience and to alleviate confusion.

Armor Inconsistency

Armor Names

  • The following DRK Relic Hands are called "Finger Gauntlets" when no other Dark Knight hand Artifact/Relic/Empyrean pieces are called "Finger Gauntlets", only "Gauntlets". This includes the lower level version (Abyss Gauntlets):
    Fall. Fin. Gaunt. (ID: 26990)
Fall. Fin. Gaunt. +1 (ID: 26991)
Fall. Fin. Gaunt. +2 (ID: 23204)
Fall. Fin. Gaunt. +3 (ID: 23539)

Armor Descriptions
  • Inconsistent text between Orvail ring (ID: 27591) and Orvail ring +1 (ID: 26203) - The lines "Increases rate of synthesis success by %" and "Decreases likelihood of synthesis material loss +%" are swapped.

  • "Trick Attack +" statistic switches back and forth between "Trick Attack" damage +X and "Trick Attack"+X.

All of the below items should be switched to "Trick Attack"+X for consistency:

    *Pillager's Armlets (ID: 27948)
    *Pillager's Armlets +1 (ID: 27969)
    *Pillager's Armlets +2 (ID: 23179)
    *Pillager's Armlets +3 (ID: 23514)
    *Plunderer's Vest +2 (ID: 23135)
    *Plunderer's Vest +3 (ID: 23470)

  • The job ability "Cover" has multiple wording variations across JA/Menus/equipment that enhance the ability:
    Uses: "Cover"+X
    (20728) Kheshig Blade
    (16604) Save the Queen

    Uses: "Cover" duration +X
    (21641) Save the Queen III

    Uses: "Cover" effect duration +X
    (23381) Reverence Coronet +3
    (23046) Reverence Coronet +2
    (27690) Reverence Coronet +1

    Merits
    Uses: Cover Effect Length

    Job Points:
    Uses: Cover Duration

Seems they also do a split on Japanese text too:
    (20728) Kheshig Blade
    (16604) Save the Queen
    Uses: かばう+X (Google translate: Cover+X)

    (21641) Save the Queen III
    (23381) Reverence Coronet +3
    (23046) Reverence Coronet +2
    (27690) Reverence Coronet +1
    Merits
Uses: かばう効果時間+X (Google translate: Cover effect time+X)

    Job Points
Uses: かばう効果時間延長 (Google translate: Protecting effect time extension)

  • Endorsement Ring (ID: 28469) description reads "720 minutes" as the effect time, but all other rings read "xxx min."

  • Nantosuelta's Cape (ID: 26266)
    Read as: Indicolure effect duration
Should read as: "Indicolure" duration +X.

  • Bagua Pants/+1/+2/+3 (IDs: 27192/27193/23284/23619)
    Azimuth Gaiters/+1 (IDs: 27451/27452)
Read as: "Indicolure" spell duration +X.
Should read as: "Indicolure" duration +X.

  • Discrepancy between the statistic "Reduced movement speed" and "Decreases movement speed" on weapons and armor
    Items with "Reduces Movement Speed":
Scuta Cape (ID:10970), Mollusca Mantle (ID:10980), Oneiros Barbut (ID:11817), Oneiros Axe (ID:18519)

    Items with "Decreases Movement Speed":
Dusk Musk (ID:12445),Dusk Jerkin (ID:12573), Dusk Gloves (ID:12701), Dusk Trousers (ID:12879), Dusk Ledelsens (ID:12957),
    Dusk Musk +1 (ID:13938),Dusk Jerkin +1 (ID:14391), Dusk Gloves +1 (ID:14825), Dusk Trousers +1 (ID:14307), Dusk Ledelsens +1 (ID:14188), Lavalier +1 (ID:10962), Mahant Sandals (ID:15759), Oily Trousers (ID:16344), Plumb Boots (ID:10372), Raikiri (ID:17814)

  • Cornelia's Belt (ID: 26365)
The description says "STR: 10" instead of "STR+10" like every other item.

Weapon Inconsistency

Weapon Descriptions
  • Terpsichore Lv80 (ID: 19078) - "Augment Steps II" This also appears to be an issue in the Japanese client too.
The "Augment Steps II" statistic does nothing more compared to the "Augment Steps" statistic on the Level 75 version of the weapon, so there is no "II" rank of the effect.

  • Terpsichore Lv85 (ID: 19098) - "Augment Steps III" This also appears to be an issue in the Japanese client too.
The "Augment Steps III" statistic does nothing more compared to the "Augment Steps" statistic on the Level 75 version of the weapon, so there is no "III" rank of the effect.

  • Terpsichore Lv90 & Lv95 (ID: 19630, 19728) - "Augment Steps IV" This also appears to be an issue in the Japanese client too.
The "Augment Steps IV" statistic does nothing more compared to the "Augment Steps" statistic on the Level 75 version of the weapon, so there is no "IV" rank of the effect.

  • Terpsichore Lv99, Lv99 II, Lv119, Lv 119 II, Lv 119 III (ID: 19837, 19966, 20557, 20558, 20584) - "Augment Steps V" This also appears to be an issue in the Japanese client too.
The "Augment Steps V" statistic does nothing more compared to the "Augment Steps" statistic on the Level 75 version of the weapon, so there is no "V" rank of the effect.

Here are two context threads for the Terpsichore problems. It was "fixed" before, but it broke:
    - https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/forums/71#threads/38135

  • Solstice (ID: 21085)
Read as: "Indicolure" spell duration +X.
Should read as: "Indicolure" duration +X.

  • The Rostam (ID: 21581) has its last statistic cut off when switching "menus" to view its help text.

The last stat ""Phantom Roll" effect: Damage taken -6%" is cut off, and when pressing the menu button, the next page only displays "taken -6%".

  • Guttler (Level 119 III) ID: 21750 erroneous "." after the word Choke.

  • Kaja Knife (ID: 21564)
    Kaja Sword (ID: 21620)
    Kaja Claymore (ID: 21673)
    Kaja Axe (ID: 21721)
    Kaja Scythe (ID: 21829)
    Kaja Lance (ID: 21882)
    Kaja Katana (ID: 21921)
    Kaja Rod (ID: 22030)
    Kaja Staff (ID: 22085)
    Raetic Staff (ID: 22080)
    Raetic Staff +1 (ID: 22081)
    Pandit's Staff (ID: 22101)
    Ice Brand (ID: 20672)

The Magic Damage stat is written as "Magic Damage+x" on most pieces of gear. However, on these weapons its written as "Magic Damage +x", with the space between Magic Damage and the +

General/Usable Items

Item Short Names

  • The game shows "Lu. Scale Box" (ID: 6590) & "Lu. Hide Box" (ID: 6591) for Odyssey Scales and Hides, but the wings are listed as "L. Wing Box" (ID: 6592)

  • The short name "Tr. Gr. Coffer." (ID:6292) for Tryl-Wuj's grand coffer has an erroneous trailing period.

  • Ethereal Droplet (ID: 9202)
The name in the log shows "a" when it should be "an": "a ethereal droplet"

Dialogue Tables

Quests

  • When doing the Rune Fencer AF quiz, Liement is spelled "Liemont".

  • When turning in Job Points for Oboro, on at least the Aeonic subitem, there's a space in front of Warrior.

  • There is a Unity (Shared F) objective (at least for Apururu) titled "Van. Vermin . Ph. Dmg. F (UC)" It's missing a "w"

  • In The Voracious Resurgence Mission 9-3, in Eastern Adoulin, Glowing Hearth refers to Oshasha as "Osahsha".

  • When checking Aurum Strongboxes count in Odyssey, in the menu, "Chaos Steward" is misspelled as "Choas Steward".

Battle Log

  • When you fight the Goblin NM in Odyssey Sheol B, Tripix, the log appends "the" before his name and and his adds' names, despite his name being a proper beastman name.

    "Geriond defeats the Tripix."
    "Geriond defeats the Tripix's Goblin."

  • The Sheol B status report lists "Maverick_Maude" instead of "Maverick Maude" for that NM's kill count.

  • Digest pet ability from the pet Slime Familiar and Sultry Patrice is misspelled in the chatlog as "Digset".

  • Issues with Arebati from Odyssey:
    - Upon victory, the RP message refers to the NM as "Arebtai".
    - The title/designation earned for victory is "Arepati Assaulter"

  • In Odyssey Sheol Goal, many boss adds are misspelled:
Bumba's Razz should be "Bumba's Raaz".
Bumba's Cracklaw should be "Bumba's Craklaw"
Ngai's Cracklaw should be "Ngai's Craklaw"

  • Omen's entry dialogue is messed up, but in writing this I understand why it slipped through QA. It's a bit complicated to explain and the finer details probably didn't make it to the localization team.

Omen uses a ticketing system, so each person that registers is given a ticket with a number on it sequentially. You might see a similar system in a store or DMV where you take a number and wait instead of standing in line.

However, when you try to enter Omen, it says:
"You are currently number X in line, with Y in front of you."

In this case, if you accept the dialogue choice you will receive the number X+1, so X is the last ticket someone took. The next ticket called will always be Y+1, so Y is the last ticket that entered. That's very confusing, because if you imagine it saying:
"You are currently number 460 in line, with 456 in front of you." it sounds like you have a very long wait ahead of you but actually only 5 tickets need to be called (457, 458, 459, 460, 461).

In meat counter terminology, this should be something more like.
"Last ticket was X. Now serving Y."

OTHER ISSUES

  • Synthesis Menu
After initializing a synthesis with a crystal, craft levels are not shown in the English client like they are in the Japanese client.

  • Main Menu > Second Menu > View House > Mog Safe - Help Text on top menu says
View contents of Mog Safe. Items can only be removed or stores when inside your Mog House or Rent-a-Room.
    SHOULD BE
View contents of Mog Safe. Items can only be removed or stores when inside your Mog House.

Notably, Mog Safe/Mog Safe 2 are accessible via Nomad Moogle, but Storage is not, even though it says the exact same help text too.

  • Corrosive Ooze pet ability from the pet Generous Arthur says in the tooltip that the move deals fire damage when it is very clearly water damage.

  • Misleading objective text in Omen:
"Vanquish X foes." should be "Vanquish Sweetwater foes X times."
"Perform X skillchains using weaponskills on your foes." should be "Perform X consecutive skillchains using weaponskills on your foes."
"Reduce your foe's HP by at least 15000 using a single magic attack without performing a magic burst." requires clarification that pet abilities don't count, though I don't have a good suggestion on wording (maybe "using magic" as an analog to "using weaponskills"?).

On the second floor of Omen, the Ethereal Ingress gives the somewhat confusing options to "Go into the light" or "Go into the smaller light", the latter heading toward the figuratively "bigger" boss as well as a literally larger floor. This is a somewhat subtle mistranslation. The name of the smaller light in Japanese is 詰みの光, and while 「詰」 can indeed mean "compressed", "compact", "pressured", and the like, in this case it clearly carries the word's other common meaning of "checkmate", as all Omen bosses are named after shogi pieces and Ou is the king. Thus, the "smaller light" should in fact be named the "checkmate light", which would be far less confusing and error-prone.

  • The help text for the Afterglow status effect contains the word "effect." twice.

  • Numbing Noise pet ability from the pet Suspicious Alice says in the tooltip that the move deals damage when it only inflicts Stun effect.

Predatory Glare pet ability from the pet Tiger Familiar, Saber Siravarde, and Blackbeard Randy says in the tooltip that the move deals damage when it only inflicts Stun effect. (These should probably say "Duration varies with TP.")

Wild Carrot pet ability from the pet Hare Familiar, Keeneared Steffi, Lucky Lulush, Droopy Dortwin, and Pondering Peter says in the tooltip that the move deals damage when it only restores HP. To be consistent with WS descriptions (like Dagan), it should read as "Amount restored varies with TP."

Crossthrash pet ability from the pet Tiger Familiar, Saber Siravarde, and Blackbeard Randy says in the tooltip that "Damage varies with TP" even though damage is the same at all TP amounts.

Mega Scissors pet ability from the pet Porter Crab Familiar and Jovial Edwin says in the tooltip that "Damage varies with TP" even though damage is the same at all TP amounts.

Hoof Volley pet ability from the pet Hippogryph Familiar and Daring Roland says in the tooltip that "Damage varies with TP" even though damage is the same at all TP amounts.

  • On the Sheol Gaol Check Status page, most of the NMs are set up like:

    (name): Veng.: (level) RP: (RP)

However, Arebati lacks a space after RP:

  • Blade: Shun's description should be attack varies with TP.

  • The in-game description for Dragon Kick now in part reads "Delivers an eightfold attack." Testing confirms that it's still only twofold (same TP return as other twofold H2H WS).

  • Shattersoul's description should be chance of magic def. down effect varies with TP. The English description says it's 3 hit and the JP I think says it's 4 hit.

  • Having more than 1000 RoE completed overflows the space available in the RoE window. This error is present WITHOUT .DAT mods too.

  • The menu for purchasing ISNM KI's from the NPC Shajaf has typos. It says the following:

It should read "3000 IS: Level 75 offer", which would be an abbreviation for Imperial Standing.

  • The title for killing Arebati has a typo:
Arepati Assaulter should be Arebati Assaulter

  • In the assault missions "Nyzul Isle Investigation" (both iterations), if you click on an activated lamp in on a floor with the "Same Time" objective, it says something to tune of "All lamps have been activated, but something else is required to fulfill the objective", even if that's the only lamp active.

It is supposed to say "this lamp" instead of "all lamps".

  • The help text for the Tactician's Roll buff says "TP is gradually increasing.", while all other buffs affecting point-based acronyms (including Adloquium) use the more correct plural copula "are".

  • When redeeming the "Deed Token" key items, the NPCs give players the option to choose "Argosy Armor", which is incorrect and should be changed to say "Agoge Armor". Only the WAR set is affected by this.

Argosy armor is an abjuration set of armor, not JSE. The correct armor is given to the player, the menu option is simply wrong.

  • The "FallenEgg" targetable location in La Theine Plateau has no space.

  • The buffs you get when you cast Scholar's -storm II spells are distinct from the base -storm spells and the JP resources have a "II" indicator after them to distinguish them, but the English version just calls them the same thing.

So if a JP user casts Voidstorm on themselves, they receive the "妖霧の陣" buff. When they cast Voidstorm II on themselves, they receive the "妖霧の陣II" buff.

When a NA user casts Voidstorm, they get the "Voidstorm" buff. When they cast Voidstorm II, they get another buff named "Voidstorm". It should be "Voidstorm II".
