A Rogue Guide to the Precious!
A Rogue’s Guide to the Precious:
A New Thief Guide

Introduction

Hello! So we noticed the May 2014 note on "For the Shinies! A Guide for Thief" stating they no longer update it and decided to make a new guide! We wrote this in hopes that it may help thieves understand their roles in the party life.

Tricksters as they are, they tend to hide behind their fellow teammates and monsters as to not draw too much attention to themselves. Through the use of a couple actions they can help hide party members from the monsters. While they are tricking the monsters into thinking there's only one enemy, thieves try to rob them of all their shinies!

As you read through this guide, we hope you discover how versatile a thief can be in a party.

Job Traits and Job Abilities

Job Traits

Job Traits are inherent. They become active once you hit the level that is required for them.
Each tier of a Trait makes them more potent. You also gain Job Traits based on the Sub Job you choose, which will be discussed in the Sub Job section.

Job Trait Description
Gilfinder More gil on gil-dropping monsters.
Evasion Bonus I-VI Improves evasion against physical attacks.
Treasure Hunter I-III Increases chance of getting treasure.
Resist Gravity I-V Gives you a slight resistance against weight.
Damage Limit + I Grants a bonus to maximum physical damage.
Triple Attack I-II May triple your attacks.
Assassin Guarantees that a correctly lined up Trick Attack will be a critical hit.
Critical Attack Bonus I-IV Increases Critical Hit Damage.
Dual Wield I-III (Job Gift: IV) Allows you to equip two weapons. Gives you up to 25% (30% JG) dual wield delay reduction. Note: Weapons delay with DW number will affect TP gained per x-amount-of-hit.
Aura Steal (Merit) Adds a dispel effect to Steal, 20% extra chance per merit to gain the dispelled buff.
Ambush (Merit) Grants an accuracy bonus to melee and ranged attacks from behind an enemy, 3 per merit level.

Job Abilities

Job Abilities are actions that are gained as you level or unlocked using merit points.

Merit Points and Job Points

Merit Points

Upon hitting 75, you can unlock Merit Points by talking to the Nomad Moogle in Ru'Lude Gardens next to Maat.
You can then earn "Limit Points" that will reward you with a Merit Point every 10,000 Limit Points.
Can use these Merit Points to unlock Attributes, Weapon Skills, and Job Specific Categories that are broken in two groups.

Group 1
These tend to contain adjustments,
like decreasing timers or increasing potencies.
Merit Description
Flee Recast Shortens recast by 10 seconds per merit level.
Hide Recast Shortens recast by 10 seconds per merit level.
Sneak Attack Recast Shortens recast by 2 seconds per merit level.
Trick Attack Recast Shortens recast by 2 seconds per merit level.
Triple Attack Rate Increase triple attack rate by 1% per merit level.

Recommendation for Group 1 Merits
5/5 Triple Attack; this nearly doubles your Triple Attack rate.
5/5 Sneak Attack or Trick Attack or some combination of the two, your preference.
Neither Flee or Hide get enough endgame usage to warrant any cooldown reduction.

Group 2
This group contains Job Traits and Job Abilities
that you can activate or enhance using multiple Merit Point tiers.
Merit Description
Assassin’s Charge (Recast: 5 minutes) Will triple your next attack. Increase chance of fourfold attack by 5% per merit level.
Enhanced by Relic Feet upgraded: Gives a 1% critical hit rate per merit level.
Feint (Recast: 2 minutes) Your next attack will greatly reduce an enemy's evasion. Increase chance of Treasure Hunter level up by 25% per merit level.
Enhanced by Relic Legs upgraded: Gives another -10 Evasion per merit level.
Aura Steal Adds a Dispel effect to Steal. Occasionally absorbs dispelled effect. Increase absorb rate by 20% per merit level.
Enhanced by Relic Head upgraded: Adds a 20% chance of 2 effects to be dispelled or stolen per merit level.
Ambush Grants an accuracy bonus to melee and ranged attacks from behind an enemy. Increase accuracy bonus by 3 per merit level.
Enhanced by Relic Body upgraded: Gives +1% Triple Attack per merit level when Ambush conditions are met.

Recommendation for Group 2 Merits
5/5 in Feint, to help TH gain and lowering a monster's evasion.
5/5 Aura Steal very useful in removing buffs off the target.
Ambush is not very useful with the amount given and requirement of position, making it impractical.

Job Points

Job Points are unlocked at level 99 from the Nomad Moogle in Ru'Lude Gardens next to Maat.
Similar to Merit Points with using Limit Points, Job Points are gained from earning "Capacity Points". Unlike Merit Points, you will need 30,000 Capacity Points to gain a Job Point.
Also unlike Merit Points, you must be on the Job you specifically want the Job Points to gain them on that Job.
For a more in-depth explanation of the Job Point system, please visit Job Points.

The order in which you spend your Job Points is based on personal preference and play style.

Job Point Categories
Each can be enhanced to 20 tiers.
Job Point Description
Perfect Dodge Effect Increases magic evasion while under the effects of Perfect Dodge. Increase magic evasion by 3 per tier.
Larceny Effect Increases the duration of effects stolen via Larceny. Increase the effect duration by 1 second per tier.
Sneak Attack Effect Increases the DEX bonus to Sneak Attack. Increase DEX bonus by 1% per tier.
Trick Attack Effect Increases the AGI bonus to Trick Attack. Increase AGI bonus by 1% per tier.
Steal Recast Reduces the recast time of Steal. Reduce recast time by 2 seconds per tier.
Mug Effect Steals HP when using Mug. Steal HP equal to 5% of DEX and AGI per tier. Does not work on undead.
Despoil Effect Steals TP when using Despoil. Steal 2% of target's TP per tier.
Conspirator Effect Increases physical accuracy while under the effects of Conspirator. Increase physical accuracy by 1 per tier.
Bully Effect Increases the chance of the target becoming intimidated while under the effects of Bully. Increase chance by 1% per tier.
Triple Attack Effect Increases the physical attack of Triple Attack. Increase physical attack by 1 per tier.

Recommendation
All of the job point categories have their uses, but all very situational.
For meleeing purposes, the triple attack, sneak attack and trick attack boosts are very nice for the added damage.
Despoil effect is wonderful for the TP steal. Keep in mind that a poorly timed Despoil can result in not receiving TP, yet while a well timed one can result in a good amount of TP and inhibit the monster from using a TP move sooner. Mug effect can be nice for a bit of a small cure when you need it, whether solo or with a party. Conspirator’s increase of accuracy is a nice boost for harder content where accuracy is key.
In the end, having all categories capped out really will boost your gameplay from the Gifts received.

Job Gifts

Gifts are automatically received when Job Points are used in the categories listed above. The values of each gift is cumulative overall.

Subjobs

Very situational\Preferably {THF/THF}! But seriously, sub what you want just be aware that each sub can modify a few variables.

Subjobs
Dragoon With the addition of the Job Trait of WS Dmg Boost I, subbing DRG has become popular sub, giving a WS DMG +7% on all hits of a WS. Using High Jump to remove enmity (30%) is a nice perk also.
Warrior Most used for a DD subjob. Gaining attack and double attack traits, as well as the nice JAs of Berserk, Aggressor and Warcry to increase your attacks and accuracy.
Dancer Best solo subjob, but can be slightly helpful in some parties as well. Several JAs that can enfeeble enemies, self haste and even a bit of curing. Job Trait of Skillchain Bonus +8% dmg is great when closing a skillchain.
Ninja Subjob shroud in shadows of the past. Anymore these days it is used only for shadows or if needing ninjutsu or katana procs in Abyssea or VW.
Rune Fencer Useful when needing the bonus of magic defense in more higher contents. Some parties may ask for this to be sub for your survivability.
Samurai Rarely used sub job for non 2-handed weapon users. Benefits would be store tp (+15), meditate and sekkanoki, for use in extra weapon skilling or self skill chains. Without use of hasso, most do not use this as a subjob.

Treasure Hunter

Overview

As one of the many facets of a Thief's core, Treasure Hunter plays a vital role in a party's obtainment of spoils. Testings have proven that some items chances of dropping has been increased. While some items are based off of Treasure Hunter, SE developers have stated that there are some rare pieces that are not affected. That doesn't mean that Treasure Hunter should then be discarded, as SE has not listed every item, only a select few.

Through the years, Thieves have spent hours at building Treasure Hunter on monsters all over Vanadiel to test on the increase percentage on the item drops. With the information they have provided, we have been able to ascertain the best monsters to fight for specific items that we may be seeking. For example, Coeurl Whiskers drop around 50% of the time off Master Coeurls in Behemoth Dominion, while the Master Coeurls in Yhoater Jungle around 8%.

Thieves are masters of evading attacks, but there are times when you'll find you can't evade an attack.
The cap for -% PDT/-% MDT/-% BDT/-% DT is 50%. Try to reach the cap using the various pieces you can obtain.
For more information and calculations of Damage Taken, click here.
In many equip slots there are no good Damage Taken Reduction gears or you may reach cap with just a few slots, so in that case you'll want to increase your Evasion+ gears, both Physical Evasion and Magical Evasion.
And, it never hurts to increase your HP, cross your fingers and hope you live!
