THF Equipment Heading
Section V. Equipment
Endgame in FFXI is glamour a process of acquiring "tiers" of gear - you need a certain quality of gear to successfully challenge monsters to get better gear. With that better gear, you can challenge harder monsters for even better gear. Rinse and repeat forever! It's the gear treadmill we all love, but with a ton of horizontal progression because you can gear-swap in the middle of combat.

I've separated these tiers of gear into various quality levels:
  1. BBQ: For pre-Adoulin returners and new players. Requires no 99 or ilvl content and is enough to get you started hunting for actual gear. If THF is not your first job and you have another with ilvl gear, you can probably skip this entirely.
Includes gear from Adoulin bayld, Records of Eminence sparks, Abyssea, original Dynamis, and pre-99 story content (anything before Seekers of Adoulin). This isn't party-acceptable gear, you will be carried, so please only party with good friends until you get the next tier!

  2. 0Q: A minimum standard for THF gear, using entirely solo content!
Reforged AF and Relic +1, Reforged Empyrean NQ, Domain Invasion, Ambuscade NQ, 119 UNMs, Alluvion Skirmish, old HTBFs. 1m gil cap for gear bought from the AH (either on Bahamut or Asura).

  3. NQ: Gear requiring or greatly benefitting from parties.
This improves on the 0Q set with additions from Omen drops and AF +2, Relic +2, Vagary Empyrean +1, Abjurations, Ambuscade +2 and JSE back, 128 UNMs, Delve, Escha Zi'tah and Ru'Aun. 5m gil cap from the AH.

  4. HQ: Gear from harder / grindier / more expensive sources. Assumes you have your 5% Dual Wield job gift from having 550 or more Job Points.
Omen AF +3, Divergence JSE neck +1 and Relic +3, Sortie Empyrean +2 and JSE ear NQ, Sinister Reign (beware: random augments!), all UNMs, Reisenjima, Odyssey unaugmented, new HTBFs (Odin, Cait Sith, Alexander, Lilith, Shinryu), 10m gil cap.
Notably excludes RMEA (Relic Mythic Empyrean Aeonic and now Prime) weapons, empyrean AF +3, JSE neck +2, JSE ear +2, augmented Odyssey gear. I hope you have a good LS by now :p

  5. QQ: What about the "everything in the game" tier? Should you get a Mandau or a Aeneas? Check out Rogue's Gallery. This guide is focused on getting to that "everything in the game" tier, it's a ton of work to update this tier every time the game is patched, and I'd just be repeating other people's words.

A geared THF should have at the very least: a TP set, a TP with TH set, a weaponskill (WS) set for each WS worth their while, and a Damage Taken -% (DT) set for survival. At higher tiers of gearing you'll want to have multiple versions of each set for situational purposes. Let's break it down!

TP Set
A TP set is a gearset that attempts to maximize "white damage", your auto-attack damage, while also getting 1000 or more TP as quickly as possible in order to use a weaponskill. The "quickly as possible" part is done by maximizing attack speed. For a THF, this means 26% equipment haste, up to 44% magic haste, and the rest from Dual Wield or Haste Samba. Your trusts Koru-Moru and Joachim will give you Haste II for 30% magic haste and Victory March for 15% magic haste respectively if you're solo, so the magic part is covered. With Dual Wield, having too much is a bad thing - extra Dual Wield will lower your TP gain per swing but not also reduce your attack delay.

A TP set also needs enough accuracy to hit the 99% accuracy cap on appropriate content, then once accuracy is at cap we want Triple Attack for more attacks and Store TP for better TP generation. Well geared THFs will have sets - or at least equipment swaps - for different accuracy requirements, and for different levels of magic haste. If you know your target's evasion, then you can /checkparam <me> to see your accuracy. You want (evasion + 48) accuracy on your mainhand and (evasion + 40) accuracy on your offhand for capped accuracy.

Finally, you'll want to be able to substitute in TH gear without major losses in relevant stats.

WS Sets
Rudra's Storm and Mandalic Stab are single-hit skills that scale with DEX, so we focus on DEX and Weapon Skill Damage+ (WSD+) gear.
Evisceration is multi-hit and can crit, so we look for DEX, accuracy (only the first hit gets +100 accuracy), crit damage and crit chance, but not WSD+ (because it only works on the first hit).
Aeolian Edge is single-hit and magical. We focus on WSD+, Magic Attack Bunnies (MAB), and INT.
Other weaponskills in your toolkit are Exenterator (multihit, AGI-based), Shark Bite (two hit, DEX/AGI equal scaling), and Dancing Edge (multihit, DEX/CHR scaling), but you should be reserving these for if you really need to trigger a specific skillchain. At our level - especially with kaja knife or Tauret - you'll want to use Evisceration for unstacked 1000 TP weaponskills, and skillchain with Rudra's Storm stacked with SA or TA. Things get a lot more complicated with RMEA weapons.

DT sets
These come in many flavors, but the general rule is to aim for -50% Physical Damage Taken (PDT) and -22% Magic Damage Taken (MDT) because Shell V gives you 28% MDT, and you cap at -50% PDT / MDT. "Damage Taken -%" stats count for both PDT and MDT.
The flavoring is what else do you want on this set - do you want to be able to TP in it? Then it's a "hybrid" DT/TP set - maybe with less DT and more TP. Do you want to be able to evade attacks entirely? What about magic evasion? What about Magic Defense Bonus? Lots of possibilities.

Other sets
You can always get more gear for utility purposes like Regen, Poison (to combat Sleep), Ranged, Sword skill, Hand-to-Hand skill, Steal... but I probably won't include all of those sets here.

BBQ -1 TP Set
An absolute minimum set to get ilvl pieces where you can. Even without any accessories you'll trivialize pre-99 content, especially with trusts. Much of this is from sparks from Records of Eminence. You get the bayld pieces from Adoulin - if you haven't unlocked Adoulin, you should do the first couple of missions just so you can talk to the weapons and armor vendors. Wear anything you want in the other slots - or even nothing!

Spreadsheeted against Soundsplitter Bats (ilvl 123, 1010 evasion), with Sole Sushi and trust buffs (Haste II, March/Madrigal). Your hit rate is pretty low (78% mainhand, 66% offhand). Against ilvl 117 or less you're totally fine, don't worry about food.

TP set gives 115 DPS with 1015 (main) / 992 (off) accuracy, 16.9 secs to WS.
Evisceration averages 1596 damage.
Use SA / TA with Shark Bite.
BBQ TP Set
Cobble together whatever you can from sparks/bayld, the AH, and whatever story content you've finished. I wouldn't try to get everything on this list! They're just recommendations if you happen to have the pieces already.

Your gear gives you 25% equipment haste and 13% extra Dual Wield, so you should be at attack speed cap when buffed from your trusts! We're actually a bit over the cap (11% without job gifts) with the Dual Wield, which isn't great.

This is intended to be a low-effort start, so we're not worrying about a weaponskill or Damage Taken set. Don't die!

Spreadsheeted against Soundsplitter Bats (ilvl 123, 1010 evasion), with Sole Sushi and trust buffs (Haste II, March/Madrigal). Your hit rate still isn't capped (94% main, 82% off).

TP set gives 190 DPS with 1047 (main) / 1024 (off) accuracy, 12.0 secs to WS.
Evisceration averages 2038 damage.
Source Items
Peacekeeper's Coalition (bayld) / Sparks homestead dagger, eminent dagger, espial cap, Shneddick tabard +1, espial bracers, espial hose, espial socks
Abyssea raider's boomerang, Nusku's sash, ziel charm, Epona's ring
Dynamis - Qufim Aife's mantle
CoP Mission 8-4 rajas ring
Divine Might suppanomimi
Limbus brutal earring
  • If you don't have any bayld, you can convert copper vouchers into bayld, 1000 each. espial gambison is an alternative body if you want to instead spend sparks, but you'll need 4% haste on your belt to cover the haste difference.

  • You can get eminent dagger and two Espial pieces from Intermediate RoE objectives.

  • raider's boomerang is 3% Dual Wield. I worry that this is the last time I recommend a throwable weapon and you'll get in a bad habit of throwing things. Most of your career as THF you need to be very careful not to throw your fancy ammo! You do have darts you can swap in for pulling when you start using ammo for stats.

  • If you're a new player, many pieces on this list are very time consuming (Limbus, most things from Abyssea, and the TH8 set), and you should just fill slots with whatever you find. Don't actually worry about getting TH8 yet.

  • suppanomimi and Nusku's sash are 5% Dual Wield.

  • brutal earring is 5% Double Attack.

0Q Gear Sets
I hope you're ready for a ton of Domain Invasion! Shijo's are path C (main) and D (off), all Adhemar and Lustratio are path B. You'll also want to finish up in Dynamis and Abyssea (getting your Relic/Empyrean armor in the process), do your story missions, and dip your toe into Ambuscade.

These sets target Soundsplitter Bats (ilvl 123, 1010 evasion), with carbonara and trust buffs (Haste II, March/Madrigal). You will find that you can sometimes self-SC, which is pretty cool! A starter self-SC is Evisceration > Dancing Edge (Distortion) > Evisceration (Dark) > Rudra's Storm (Dark).

Your self-SC capabilities are not consistent at all so I'm not worrying too much about Dancing Edge, Shark Bite, or Exenterator sets, all of which are only needed for skillchains. I'm also not entirely sure you can unlock Rudra's Storm solo, so if you can't RS just stack SA/TA on Evisceration.

TP set gives 635 DPS with 1056 accuracy, 9.2 secs to WS.
Evisceration averages 6779 damage.
SA+Rudra's averages 12526 damage.
DT set gives 37% PDT and 20% MDT.
Aeolian Edge does 2379 damage.
Source Items
Domain Invasion shijo (C main / D off), Adhemar Attire (B), Odr earring, Voluspa tathlum, lustratio subligar (B)
Ambuscade Meghanada Armor, Mummu kecks, Mummu ring, Toutatis's cape (unaugmented)
High Tier Battlefields levante dagger, lapidary tunic, plunderer's armlets +1, nilas gloves, plunderer's poulaines +1, cessance earring, patricius ring
AH / Crafted Yetshila, merman's earring, Ramuh ring, friomisi earring, toro cape
Abyssea qirmiz tathlum, skulker's poulaines (also requires a SKCNM), Twilight torque, Epona's ring, cavaros mantle, soil belt
Voidwatch rancor collar, stoicheion medal, succor ring, mollusca mantle
Walk of Echoes shifting necklace +1, chiner's belt +1, flume belt, prosilio belt +1
Story Missions / Quests moonshade earring, Karieyh ring +1
Dynamis oneiros ring, assassin's armlets +2, assassin's poulaines +2
Sparks / Bayld Shneddick tights +1, acumen ring
Potpourri soil gorget, salire belt, Erlene's notebook, highwing helm, rancorous mantle
  • Most of the Domain Invasion items can also be found as direct drops through Geas Fete, but I do not expect that to be soloable. Domain Invasion is "soloable" in that you don't need to group up with people, but you will still be assisted by others present.

  • shijo is path C (main) and path D (offhand). The offhand in particular will last you a long time.

  • Adhemar and Lustratio gear are path B. Toutatis's cape is unaugmented, but for TP you'll eventually want DEX+30, Acc/Atk+20, Store TP +10, PDT -10%.

  • Adhemar NQ path B is substantially better than Mummu / Meghanada NQ, and is more comparable to Mummu / Meghanada +2.

  • moonshade earring has TP Bonus +250 augment. The other augment is your choice, but I recommend MAB +4 for Aeolian Edge.

  • Aeolian Edge gear is almost completely distinct from the rest of the sets. It may not be worth your time - or it may be the only thing worth your time.

  • Other TH options at this tier are white rarab cap +1 and Sandung.

  • Damage Taken set is a swap set. At this gear tier you don't have enough options to make an effective hybrid DD set, so if that's a concern consider subjob choices like /NIN or /RUN.
