Didnt see posted anywhere else, but...

From Freshly pciked Vana'diel 25 March 2017:
When service for FINAL FANTASY XI started in Japan, players were able to fish up Excalibur in a certain area. At the time, we hadn't introduced anything like relic weapons, so they added Excalibur as one of the rarest weapons you can catch. The rate was something close to 1 in 20,000 to fish up this weapon. Looking at the data, we found out that no one was able to catch an Excalibur from fishing. The team in charge of fishing probably added this thinking even if players were able to get it, they wouldn't be able to equip it, since the level of the weapon was set to level 70 when the level cap was still at level 50. This surprised us when we found this out later. If a player was able to successfully catch Excalibur from fishing, we would've never seen Excalibur created as a relic weapon! Also just to note, the item ID for this weapon is different from the relic weapon version, so the stats on this weapon were much lower than the current Excalibur and were probably closer to Ridil's stats.

That certain spot is probably the pond where you actually get the cutscene for relic weapon Excalibur or maybe its on the shore of the lake in Jugner Forest / Carpenter's Landing?

I would think the lake, yeah. Dragon's Aery is a Zilart area, so it wouldn't have been there.

you used to be able to start fishing and glitching yourself to move around, and it would enable you to catch royal noble beds from normal ground areas.

I doubt it's still fishable now, it was probably removed years ago when they added the relic version of Excalibur.

The explanation included that the original was removed when they added relics. (And that if anyone HAD fished one up, we would not have gotten "Excalibur" as a relic. XD) OOC, how long was vanilla up before Zilart was released? With a 0.005% catch rate, I'm absolutely not surprised at all that no one caught one before relics were added. XD

Probably Lake Mechieume in Jugner Forest, on the side where King Arthro and his 10 Knight Crabs spawn. That seems to resonate well with the whole Knights of the Round Table and Lady of the Lake Arthurian Legend lore.

The item itself was certainly removed. According to the wiki link Skjalf posted above, it had an item ID of 000040BA (16570). If you check that weapon entry in POLUtils, it's nothing but a blank placeholder entry now.
