Robert De Niro and the Tribeca Film Festival Embrace Anti-vaccine Documentary, Reap the Whirlwind
Discredited doctor Andrew Wakefield, who first linked vaccines to autism, will have an enormous platform at the festival that De Niro founded. Why?
VFHollywood
Quote: Robert De Niro says that the Tribeca Film Festival, which he co-founded 15 years ago, is screening a documentary made by a widely discredited doctor only to provide “the opportunity for a conversation around the issue” of autism. But for those who have protested the festival’s inclusion of Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe, the festival and De Niro’s decision is tantamount to taking a side in a hotly contested debate—one that many scientists believe shouldn’t be a debate at all.
Vaxxed is directed by Andrew Wakefield, a British medical researcher who authored a 1998 paper that purported to find a link between the common MMR vaccine and autism; Wakefield’s paper was widely cited by anti-vaccination crusaders, but his results were never replicated in another study. Wakefield’s paper has since been rescinded by the journal in which it was originally published, and Wakefield’s medical license has been revoked.
The documentary was announced as part of the Tribeca Film Festival lineup on Monday in the “Tribeca Talks” series, which invites filmmakers to discuss the film at length with audience members after the screening. On Wednesday, director Penny Lane wrote an open letter on her Facebook page asking Tribeca to fix their “very serious (if human) mistake” and cancel the screening; Lane’s most recent film, Nuts!, about a doctor who falsely claimed to have cured male impotence, premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
The festival’s official response is thus far limited to this tweet, and a slightly longer official statement saying essentially the same thing:
Quote: @brianlfrye Like most film fests, Tribeca is about dialogue & conversation. We present opposing viewpoints without judgement or endorsement. But it’s rare to find film festivals that embrace films, especially documentaries, as instantly polarizing as Vaxxed. The 9/11 truther documentary Loose Change, for example, found a long online life without ever screening at a festival. Dinesh D’Souza’s doc 2016: Obama’s America had no festival presence at all, but grossed $33 million at the domestic box office, making it the second-biggest documentary in history after Fahrenheit 9/11; that film premiered at Cannes.
Variety even reported on the general political leanings of film-festival programming in 2014, with Toronto programmer Thom Powers saying he saw “a lot more of what I describe as left-wing propaganda films.” The conversation around autism and vaccines is not nearly as partisan as most hot topics in this country, though; anti-vaxxers are as likely to be libertarians in the heartland as they are to be crunchy San Francisco parents.
People who believe in Wakefield’s claims—or in the story that Vaxxed tells, about “whistle-blower” C.D.C. scientist William Thompson—do remain in the vast minority, which is how Vaxxed has come up for such sharp criticism. De Niro’s statement, while theoretically just asking that “all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined,” is for vaccine supporters a call for debate where none exists. The C.D.C. and all reputable science says that vaccines don’t cause autism. The Tribeca Film Festival has chosen to program a film that says they do, and is lending a microphone to the loudest proponent of that discredited idea.
De Niro’s full statement is below.
Quote: “Grace and I have a child with autism and we believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined. In the 15 years since the Tribeca Film Festival was founded, I have never asked for a film to be screened or gotten involved in the programming. However this is very personal to me and my family and I want there to be a discussion, which is why we will be screening VAXXED. I am not personally endorsing the film, nor am I anti-vaccination; I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue.” I sent them an Email of my views on this. I was polite. Polite wasn't how I felt.

Let's also discuss the link between idiots and wholly discredited science. You know, opposing viewpoints and all.

Eh, he says he's not anti-vaccination, but still....
There's that tricky gray area between letting people having voice unpopular opinions because they should have the right to, and shutting them down because what they have to say is incredibly stupid and detrimental to society. Unfortunately it seems that people can't handle gray areas that well.

No, I spelled it correctly. Cuz 'Murica.
Quote: Gray and grey are different spellings of the same word, and both are used throughout the English-speaking world. But gray is more common in American English, while grey is more common in all the other main varieties of English. In the U.K., for instance, grey appears about twenty times for every instance of gray. In the U.S. the ratio is reversed.

one that many scientists believe shouldn’t be a debate at all.
Yet another topic scientists "believe" shouldn't be debated.
Isn't that like the total opposite of what science is about...?

Science is about evidence. There is zero evidence of a link between vaccines and autism. Arguing from a complete lack of evidence isn't debate. It's hot air.

Sure. But practical knowledge requires a decision at some point of whether or not a particular hypothesis is worth debating. There's no evidence for this link and there's really no reason to assume there would even be one in the first place. It's plain irresponsible to potentially turn people off of the idea of vaccination based on no evidence whatsoever.

So, recently one of the guys at work suffered a pretty rare condition the doctors actually think he could have got from a vaccine. Guy had no idea what was going on, barely made it to the hospital in time and will be out of work for maybe 6 months if not forever.
I'm absolutely ashamed to say I though of this site far more quickly than I should have when I heard the news.

When given a vaccine a child's body like any other, reacts to it by getting a fever. This is common knowledge and doctors even tell you to give them Tylenol to drop the fever.
In certain cases the body, especially a child's body can get a high enough fever to literally cause brain damage. Also, using Tylenol to drop a fever when it is needed to fight off dangerous pathogens can, in some cases be a bad thing as well.
That is practical knowledge and any doctor worth his degree will tell you the exact same thing. I know I have two doctors and several nurse's in my family. I happen to be somewhat of a veterinarian and like to have conversations with them about how animals and people are so alike .
There's no evidence for this link and there's really no reason to assume there would even be one in the first place.
Due to the stigma from people like you who call people stupid and other irrational things that make you feel like a debate is not needed and shouldn't even take place I doubt very much any serious conversation has ever really taken place.
Again, moderation is the key to healthy life. And it is beyond irresponsible to not ask questions and demand a debate not take place.

Again, moderation is the key to healthy life. And it is beyond irresponsible to not ask questions and demand a debate not take place. What are you not understanding about absolutely zero evidence? None. Nothing. Absolutely no smidgen of data to support it. No biological reason to even think it could be true.
No evidence means no place at the debate table. If people want to research it, fine. But until some proof actually presents itself, it's not up for a debate.

I... want to marry that man.
I'm not the one who refuses to even have a conversation. So how would that conversation go?
"Let's talk about the links between autism and vaccines."
"Ok, are there any?"
"No but-"

If I had all the answers I'd be to busy spending my massive amounts of money to be talking here with you.
Some kind of link "could" exists or it wouldn't be coming up all the time. All conspiracies die down or out over time, this is only getting louder. (government would never spy on us) In the limited amount of time I have spent looking into it, it could be possible.
However, like I said. People like you would rather call names and throw insults and want any debate or conversation about it to never take place. In case you have not noticed that only emboldens the cause and makes it harder to find any truth.
But go ahead screech those tires and drive straight of the cliff you didn't notice because you're in such a hurry to vilify civil discourse.
