Might as well add a 1TB HDD for additional media storage.

There's literally no reason to get even that board with a locked i5 processor. Skip the 16GB of ram and drop to an H97 chipset and spend the difference in cost on 970 instead of the 960 and add a HDD later.

Thanks, did most the browsing on my phone so didn't feel like hunting too much.

I'll tell him to swap to your suggested mobo but probably keep the RAM and GTX 960 suggestion because he only uses it for a few things: likely running a few Linux VMs 24/7 (RAM may come in handy when paired with the next uses as well), Video Editing, and League of Legends.

A Dell Laptop from the last few years running on Windows 7 can run it, I know that for a fact. Doesn't take some 'miraculous' computer to run this game. The graphics card if anything will be your biggest worry but I've played this game on my gf's laptop from a few years ago and it worked great. Could browse multiple tabs and FFXI at the same time. Don't spend more money than you have to unless you want to of course... Good luck!

If he's running VM's, even lightweight ones like Linux, 16GB is worth it. 750W is also way overkill, I'd grab something like this. 80+ Gold and fully modular with a 10 year warranty.

Are there any PC controllers that any of you would recommend?

Xbox 360 controllers for pc work great. Would stay away from logitech controllers like F310, etc. They tend to not last long especially if used to play a lot, so depending on playtime you might have to replace pretty often. The buttons stop working on them.

I know several people who used laptops and had overheating etc issues playing this game. Also, lag seemed worse especially when doing stuff with larger groups. Our events are normally 12-18 people with us so you can see why lag could be a issue. lol. Also, it could be though their graphics/video cards were not very good, not sure.

I have tried in past on laptop as well, and I did not like it cause of lag issues, etc. I use desktop and those are great for this game.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here yet, but if you're on a particularly tight budget, don't hesitate to go used. As long as you're purchasing from someone/somewhere using a proper sense of judgment and common sense, used parts shouldn't betray you often, if at all.

If more advice or budgeting options are needed, check out reddit subs like
/r/buildmeapc
or
/r/buildapc

Bear in mind though that this deals most particularly with desktops, so if you still feel the need to go mobile, you might need to see someone else in particular.

Even though this is a laptop, generally speaking i7s are overkill for gaming. If you really want the hyperthreading in a gaming rig, generation 4 and 5 Xeons chips are a great option at the cost of an i5. Obviously desktop only...but if you only want to play FFXI, AMDs are probably a far more cost effective option.

How do the button layouts using the 360 controller compare to the Xbox version of the game? Can I set it up to be just like if I was playing on the 360?

You must have gotten rare good ones then because I have had horrible experiences with them not lasting long, and I have seen lots of bad reviews from others as well. There was even a ffxi ah forum page about others having issues with them as well not lasting long. For example: http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/47444/logicrap-gamepads

Like I said maybe it depends on how much you play the game. I run a EU endgame linkshell on Asura, so maybe it is just cause I play too much so they wear out faster. >.<

Logitech F310 has some of the best user reviews of any gamepad under 100 bucks. I know a handful of people who've been using them for years without issue.

I am sure for casual gamer they are fine. I am just speaking from my experience and what I have seen others who play ffxi frequently who use them have said. The more you play the faster the buttons, etc wear out of course. I would have to replace mine 3-4 times a year if not more, so I eventually went to xbox controller and now I do not have that issue. I am sure for those that play games less they work fine.

It also probably depends on how you have buttons etc set up. Select buttons, cancel buttons etc wear out fast if you play a lot and have them setup on like the A, B, X, Y buttons.

Also another issue is sometimes they just stop working (have had this happen mid events to the point cannot even move character, and the usb acts like it don't recognize the device anymore, no matter what usb port it was plugged in it would not work) but when you plug in another controller (I used to buy 2 at a time cause of this happening, so I had a spare), I would just unplug the old, plug a new one back in and it would work fine again until the new one went out months later.

I know it was not a issue with my computer USB ports because this would happen on my old computer, and a brand new one I bought, so 2 different computers, and yes I had logitech latest drivers etc set up. I have not had issues since xbox controller, which is USB as well. Anyway we all play the game different amounts, all have our controllers set up differently I am sure, and we all have different experiences with different equipment. Some people have issues with a brand, some don't. It is how things go in the world, and all we can do is tell our experiences of things, so people can see all sides.

I recently bought an XboxOne wireless Controller to replace my old X360 controller and I'm not regretting it.
The digital cross is a bit noisey but overall it's awesome.

Batteries last less than they used to do on X360, but buy 2600 rechargeable ones and you'll be fine, nowhere near the lasting time of the PS4 pad, which is pretty nice too don't get me wrong, but lasting time is... unbelivably crappy.

Actually you can now without alternate drivers.

As for the anti-f310 nonsense: yeah, take better care of your stuff, I don't know what to tell you, I have a few of them, they work great (granted I've had to go in and fiddle with the R2 once or twice on one of them, but I'm fairly certain it's from keeping it in my laptop bag).

It has nothing to do with taking better care of your stuff like you said for me anyway. It has to do with how much usage is done. If you use something a lot it wears out faster. If you use something once in awhile, more casual it tends to last longer. If you do not run a event shell and kept super busy while on game then this controller is probably great for you. For those that rarely have a dull moment on game then maybe not so much.

I just do not sit in town idle every time I play ffxi like a lot of people do when they are on game. I am always kept really busy on game because I do a lot with my event shell even on non event days.

The only time you see me idle is when I am afk. As soon as I let people know I am on game I get dragged away to something, so never a dull moment for me!

I even keep events exciting by having controllers fail during them. Right Sechs? :P

I've used mine plenty, so I don't know why you're assuming otherwise.

As for the controller "failing" it sounds like you're having power spike issues on your usb ports, which isn't a controller issue.

I use other USB devices on my computers like headsets, etc and never have these issues with any other devices plugged in my USB ports on any of my computers. If it was power spike issues you would think it would affect the rest of the stuff I have plugged into USB like headsets, printer, etc but the rest all work fine. Also, I now use xbox 360 controllers USB and I have never had any issues with those doing it either.

Anyway it probably did not help that I was main whm for many years for high end game content, and a lot of times I was solo whm for alliances, and if not solo I was always main whm in tank party. That was fast paced curing that had to go on, which I am sure the buttons on the controllers got tons of usage since a lot of times had to cure super fast. Now that I am using new controller (xbox 360) I also have a new main job geo, so that is much more laid back then being solo whm with 18 people. lol

You could just get an alienware alpha steammachine for arround 400$, wich is basically a pc console u can hook up to ur tv like xbox. I know all the nerds here are gonna hate me for not sugesting building ur own pc with mind blowing specs for less, but they forget not evveryone has the knowledge to do that or the will to learn.(especially when ur over 40)

Pretty sure nowadays you just select the bottom option whatever that is, Alternate (E) according to the screenshot above. Does triggers and everything. It used to be a real ballache getting 360 pads to work nicely but looks like they eventually caught up with technology... Kind of.

I know all the nerds here are gonna hate me for not sugesting building ur own pc with mind blowing specs for less, but they forget not evveryone has the knowledge to do that or the will to learn.(especially when ur over 40)

I honestly believe htpc style consoles are the future of gaming. If console manufactures can ever get with the times and offer their product as a license or subscription with or without the hardware, htpc boxes would be a universal hardware that users would be able to utilize and consume the content they want at the price point they can afford and console manufacturers can focus on content and service instead of hardware.

I thought the steam box was a cool idea that just wasn't marketed well.
