Im ready to go pc
By March.Anything about playing on a laptop with a bluray drive and HDMI out? I know ffxi is 15 years old but if I'm buying a pc might as well be one that's up to date on everything.
Personally I wouldn't go for a laptop just because I'm into more games than just FFXI on my PC but if that's all you're gonna be getting a PC for you'll be just fine with that. Check out Newegg (www.newegg.com) if you're comfy with shopping online, they usually have the best prices on stuff.

i just bought a laptop just for ffxi. i have an iMac but i didn't want to partition the drive. i figured any laptop would do cause of the age of the game. spent like 300$ on a laptop and loaded everything up. couldn't handle the game. messed with the config and turned off all effects and so on. in a WKR, it completely locked up. returned it thanks to holiday return policies.
If you're not overclocking, skip the aftermarket cooler and thermal paste. They really are not needed for even most gaming rigs unless you're overclocking. The stock intel cooler works fine.
I also really wouldn't suggest buying a 2GB GPU even as cheap as they are right now, since a 4GB (3.5GB lol) are usually less than 100 bucks more and offer the ability to go 4K or even SLI later where 2GB VRAM is just plainly not enough for decently high settings. Highly suggest picking up an SSD. The difference between a Solid State and regular old hard drive is absurd.
What's your budget look like for a desktop? Many of us I'm sure would be more than happy to give you a general idea of what to get for getting the best performance within reach of your budget.
I'm thinking hp pavilion 17. Starts at 459.00 which doesn't look bad at all. First laptop from HP I bought was given to a friend and performance from that one seems to be pretty good still. I just want a pc were I can connect my Xbox 360 controller. The laptop I gave to my friend I bought in 2007.I plainly have no room for a tower in the bedroom I'm forced to use for my man cave. Thanks for all the feedback to.
Upgrade and get yourself an SSD. Or you can get both, and run your OS and main programs from the SSD, and use the HDD for media files, and programs you dont use often.
It is well worth the investment Sylph.Elwynbelwyn

I'm just going to say here that if you really want to play FFXI on a laptop, get one with a proper video card. That's it, nothing more. I've been using a 3-year old Dell E6520 with Nvidia 4200M and it works fine. It hurts to run newer games, but that's still pretty damn good for a biz laptop.
Nvidia or ATI/AMD, it doesn't really matter, even a toaster should work fine as long as it has a proper video card less than five years old, and has enough hard drive space to install FFXI. Offline

I run on a laptop for multiple reasons, and as long as it has a dedicated video card, thats all you need.
SSD are nice and will make it faster Ram is nice but you dont need a lot for FFXI, your OS will likely use more. Desktops are big and impractical for a lot of people and while they might be cheaper and perform better, that doesnt make it an option if you want to play on your couch or bed while watching tv. If ffxi is all you are after you can easily find a 500$ or cheaper laptop to run it well. No it wont be as good as a desktop but you already know that. I thought this was about becoming more politically correct! P&R ruined me.

Even if you have to manually upgrade to a ssd, add more ram. If it were for me I'd probably get a 15.6-17.3" that I know supports 1080P. I'm just going to say that the game still runs like crap at times regardless of the machine you're on.
By all means, get a good machine so that you can enjoy other games and do other things while playing FFXI (like video), but since XI doesn't know what to do with multiple cores and multiple processors, the game could be on the most powerful rig standing, and still occasionally run like crap. Literally just built a hypothetical PC for a friend, just gonna copy over:

Just make sure you get a good gfx card, this can make or break it. There are certain ones that can't run with ffxi. I don't recall which suck.

I know computers, shopped around for the best deal that I could, best specs that I could find. I looked at hp, newegg, bestbuy, walmart (eww), amazon, and many other online places and several manufacturers (except toshiba, every one I've had is trash). Finding one with any kind of real video card was nigh-impossible so I finally went with intel video. In ffxi? My performance is great, as long as I'm not running anything intensive in the background, like video and even sometimes Facebook. Also, I don't know about high end pc's, but even escha dragons can be murderous on this poor laptop, especially before I found /hidetrust on. $550 could definitely buy you a better pc than a laptop though, but I have to agree that if you spend 300 to 350 for laptop and expect to even play flash games, you're going to regret it. If its for gaming get on that Skylake build. No need for ~K processors. I5 6th Gen range from 198-250. The motherboards for the Z170s will be 70$ and up. Stick with DDR4 RAM somewhere between 8-16gigs, you wont need more than that. Then you just need a respectable GFx card, PSU, SSD and a HDD.
Also the 6th Gen i3's are little monsters that can handle modern games fairly easily. Even the Skylake Pentium chip is surprisingly strong and cheap with a respectable performance on a lot of games with suggested quad core minimums. I am getting ready to convert to PC as well (from Xbox). Are there any PC controllers that any of you would recommend? If so do you have a controller setup (button mapping) you wouldn't mind sharing? Thank you in advance.
XB360 and XB1 controllers should work on a Windows machine.
I am not sure of the capability of FFXI, but I use DS4 on my PC to connect one of my Dualshock 4s via Bluetooth. Works great with GTAV.
