Hi!

I've rewritten the rules node: http://www.ffxiah.com/node/272

This is mostly just a clarification, formatting, and simplification of a number of rules, though there are some minor changes (mostly in tone). I'm hoping that this version is easier to read and follow, with less ambiguity and potential for rules-lawyering.

Thoughts? I'm going to move this to the real rules node shortly but would like some feedback first. (And discussion, if there are changes people have concerns about).

Thanks!

Hm...I noticed the removal of the entirety of the "Equal Equality" clause of the old rules...

As with all forums on the internet, we need at least some form of control to keep it from devolving into anarchy and MLP fan-fiction.

Is this the kind of change we truly need here at FFXIAH.com?! FF discussions and MLP are not mutually exclusive, nor should bad pony fanfic necessarily be equated with anarchy and dissolution of all we hold dear. ;_; Niniann would be spinning in her grave hearing this! (Er, well maybe if she were...er, nevermind!)

I made it less of a "this is who we are" and more of a "don't do these things", which is why some of that went away. I'll add something like it back. It seems a little silly that something like that has to be there in 2015, but you're probably right.

That's just obvious cause and effect, can't argue with science

[Edit: a couple of changes around "Culture".]

The Internet is already saturated with Mithra porn. Honestly, the ratio of actual FFXI players to the amount of Mithra porn is staggering. I'm sure you can find a home for it somewhere else.

(It would be forbidden even without AdSense.)

Would you classify this re-write as 'lowering rules that are too damn high'?

No, there has just been some talk about vague rules and the need for clarification and restructure, as far as I know.

So like, if theres a player going around doing bad things and hopping servers changing names and doing the bad things to other people in an endless cycle how will we know to watch out for someone without a description or warning?

Don't post any personal real-life identifiable information or images about a particular user without their permission.

You can call it PII, or personally identifiable information. That is to say that saying "real-life" is, in this context, redundant.

You may actually want to change that bit about PII to a blanket disallow, while still allowing pictures; it depends on how strict you want to be(though I don't see it come up a lot here, PII is a major privacy issue).

There is a warning player thread on Player warning thread, people have been using that website for that purpose since forever. I would suggest you to use it.

FFXIAH was never the place for that type of stuff.

Nope. I don't actually know what post you're talking about. This is the result of some built-up-over-time frustrations with the rules as they are presently worded. Everything is too flowery and verbose, which leads to misinterpretations and rules-lawyering. Honestly, our rules aren't that complicated, so the official list of them should reflect that.

Simpler and easier to parse rules protect users (so they know what's forbidden) and moderators (so they know what to enforce and can point to plain-English descriptions of bad behavior).

Player warnings have been against the rules basically forever. This isn't a new change.

Comin' right up!

I specifically avoided using "PII" because it has real-world meaning. That rule is just a copy of the old one, more or less, and makes its point. RL pictures are actually a concern (certainly have been in the past) so that part would have to stay in any case.

That's as good an explanation as any.

So basically you just changed it to "moderators can issue anything they want"? Sounds like its opening a can of worms but whatever.

What is the purpose of a moderator if not to make dynamic decisions?

Purpose of one is to make sure people are following the rules. If the rules are simply "moderator can do whatever they want" without any guidelines or restrictions, it just brings about a Krizz v2 (which seems already happened and why this thread/adjustment is being done)

Moderators have guidelines and collaborate. This isn't the wild west. The attitude toward the moderation staff and the cobbled together nature of the current rules is the reason for the change.

If you actually compare the rules to the old ones, you'll notice that most rules have gone unchanged in spirit, the wording has been simplified and refined and the formatting made easier to read.

I actually find the old rules are more clear and easier to understand in my opinion. This just seems like its done to cover only the moderators and anyone that falls under their "discretion" has nothing to go back on. "Rules-Lawyering" being the only thing that would benefit someone who felt they were unjustly moderated.

The problem is actually the reverse of what you suspect; the rules as written are WAY stricter regarding punishment than ever get enforced, which is why there is always a period where a new mod is treated like MechaHitler 2.0 as they sort out the nuance. I'm just codifying the nuance and putting in writing that it's okay to not bring out the howitzers because someone is acting like a goon.
