President Obama is also set to announce a major loosening of travel and economic restrictions in what officials called the most sweeping change in U.S. policy toward Cuba since the 1961 embargo was imposed.

Interesting.

...what fun will it be to go to model U.N. for high school students now?

The most fun to be had was getting to be Cuba and just cry "embargo!" over and over.

Of course, this won't help Obama's image with people who already hate him for being a damn dirty commie.

I don't know about Obama, but I always concern myself primarily with what the people that hate me think, you know, instead of doing what's right.

Oh come on. Obama's a Democrat.

He's not doing anything for the right.

It's all for the left!

that's why we are opening relations... nobody knows how to get a cuban sandwich just right... the outside is overdone and/or the inside is cold...

we figured out cigars, sugar, rum, roast pork, cuban style beans and rice but for some reason nobody can make the *** sandwich right...

fidel castro is laughing at us all laying in his bed made out of angel feathers... I WIN!

I hate to be that guy, but that's the nature of high risk business, especially when you move capital to a country that isn't a close ally. Granted, the socioeconomic situation was quite different at that time.

Thing is, would anything be done that would be beneficial to the US, or will this be another China which doesn't follow international trade and trademark laws?

Are we going to further the import/export gap, or do we have an actual building relationship with Cuba?

It sounds like haitti 2.0 in all honesty. It'll be another foreign aid money pit, probably, but at least the cigars will be cheaper, even though they aren't actually that great.

even if we lifted the embargo tomorrow I don't see a lot of "industry" going down there in the immediate future. There is no infrastructure to support it. that place is so depressing that can't even get canadians to go there on vacation.

I think maybe they would start with some NGO charity group style tourism like Haiti...

someone wake up sean penn

Why would we give them foreign aid? It's not like they are a threat to us like Egypt and Iraq are.

Hearts and minds, 'Murica, influence, take your pick. We give foreign aid as a bribe to impoverished nations to deter them from getting friendly with our critics on the world stage. Cuban relations is a power play against a former friend who is getting militant again.

because underneath our rough exterior of rape, drone strikes, torture and shock and awe bombing campaigns is the warm gooey center of a country that really cares about things and stuff.

like turning cuba into the communist paradise che guevera told us it was going to be... right before he killed everyone that looked like they might want to disagree with him about anything.

Solid move. The reign of the Castros is coming to an end as both are over 80. Let Cuba get a taste of what they have been missing for 50 years and force the next leader to be Pro-America else face another revolution. Pretty much nothing negative about this, but we get to see the GOP whine about it anyway.

They also freed an American they'd be holding for 5 years. We're negotiating with terrorists!

They've been pretty creative over years, actually, even smuggling parts for old cars back to Cuba. Hopefully this will also improve their living conditions enough that building a raft and illegally immigrating won't be as tempting.

Yeah man, we just had to release the last 3 members of the Cuban Five, a harmless, obsolete, old news group of spies compared to what we are dealing with today.

Who are the Cuban Five?

But that doesn't stop the GOP from whining.

GOP goes nuclear over US-Cuba progress

Expect nothing from this Congress, fortunately, progress will continue without them.

Pretty sure the root of all evil is the CIA *** up your country, supporting some violent maniacs to run the country regardless of the democratic will of the people who live there. Latin America, Africa, Middle East it doesn't even really matter.

Let us not forget what Cuba was before the Castros took over.

If Country X decides they want to be communist, what right do we have to say they can't? Oh right, Team America.
