I've been playing vanilla FFXI since I joined in July 2010, and from time to time, i've been noticing weird buttons popping up at the end of my chat bar when I go to type a reply to someone's /tell:

It's part of the not-completely-removed text entry system for the Japanese client. You actually aren't supposed to see it lol

Yep, appears on NA versions all the time as well.

Everyone use the same client. It's just coded to behave "in English" if it's launched with certain parameters. That's defined by the version(region) of POL Viewer you're using.
