Returning player, blah blah. Is it all just solo with trusts? I got to level 42 today doing fields of valor with my trusts but it's getting pretty slow. (Still not as slow as the old days though) Do people make exp parties at all anymore?

On Odin server there is usually always an alliance killing Atrociraptors at Conflux #07 in Abyssea - Misaeaux.

Popular places to check are abyssea-altepa dolls, abyssea-misareaux frigatebirds and atrociraptors, abyssea-la theine worms, bostaunieux oubliette. Not likely you'll find anyone though.

For later, a good place that I love is Zehrune Mines. There are new higher level mobs there that don't aggro or link (leeches link, but you won't even go to that area).

I think it works starting around level 80 you can go there. GoV you can do bats and worms or bats and crabs for quick xp.

I solo grind with trusts until I hit the early 60s, which is when it starts to get painful, so at that point I head to Abyssea. There are almost always worm parties running on Asura.
