No.
I see you fear the unknown by making decisions based on an assumed social norms not made by yourself. Sounds like a religious action.

Science is not the new religion for the 21st century. Because I know many younger researchers who believe in some sort of deity.

So I can assure you it's not this primitive concept based out of fear. Religion whether it be Judaism, Christianity, Muslim, Buddhism etc... is more than just believing in some higher power. It's a set of morals and principals that we like to believe in.

That's not a bad take. Theological moral ideals, if you will.

Religion isn't going anywhere. Like the process many monotheists refuse to accept, religion will continue to evolve through human means and take the form of whatever manages to gain enough traction around the world. Perhaps we'll be visited by some alien species and that will become our new 'Gods', the Catholic Church is already preparing for it.

(Note: We really don't need any alien species coming here. We can't even settle racial differences, we're not ready.)

Like our mortal frames, religions die and are reborn anew as something else. Just as no one takes Prometheus seriously anymore (unless its a shitty Alien prequel) so too will the religions of our day fade before history by sword or sheer force of failing to keep up with the times.

Remember, this dude:

and this dude right here:

Were once someones religious belief.

Hey man, Kevin Sorbo IS my religious belief. Not even Hercules himself could portray Hercules that good.

I think john kerry is a buck skin vest and a headband away from starting his own commune... but I don't think it will catch on.

When they get to the solutions to the problem you start hearing the bongos and bong pipes in the background....and you can't dig it.

It's like a never ending camping trip in lame with a lot of barefoot smelly people complaining about the rain... <bongo>

we tried that all ready and sooner or later the women got tired of doing all the work and watching us smoke marijuana and brood deeply while not contributing anything at all...

except leaving the seat up at the outhouse and waiting for the splash...

edit: kill all the hippies

After seeing what Kevin Sorbo has been through IRL, I'm inclined to believe the guy really is Hercules.

Right, like if a man rapes your daughter, he owes you 50 silver shekles and has to take her hand in marriage. Morality.

I was talking more like

"Honor thy father and mother"

"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed."

EDIT: "Thou shall watch every episode of Xena"

stuff like that...

I tried being generous to the poor. Got kicked in the shins for offering to buy a starving man a sammich, because he wanted booze money instead.

There are also numerous ways to honor thy father and thy mother, even when directly disobeying them.

Technically this is relevant! Remember Callisto ate the ambrosia! So she became a god in the show!

Callisto + ambrosia = religion

So basically cherrypick the Bible for the good parts and ignore the bad stuff? I mean, I'd rather that than the insanity of a literal read but really?

These quotes are cherrypicked from a book most wouldn't read:

“Do not compare yourself to others. If you do so, you are insulting yourself.”
"If you want to shine like sun first you have to burn like it.”
“Words build bridges into unexplored regions.”
“If freedom is short of weapons, we must compensate with willpower.”
“As in everything, nature is the best instructor.”
“Obstacles do not exist to be surrendered to, but only to be broken.”

Yeah.

Clearly, the answer is no.
The differences are quite simple. Science, despite efforts to establish rules, is adaptable based on evidence. It is relative.
Religion has clearly established rules which remain immutable in the face of contrary evidence. It is absolute.

I mean these religious texts were written at different times. One cannot expect them to be applicable verbatim in 2014.

Religious texts themselves are not the monster here but rather man himself and how he chooses to interpret those texts. There is a degree of interpretation with such old texts simply because they cannot be taken verbatim in today's day and age.

Anyways I say this thread get hijacked and become the Xena thread!

Best villain on either show. Seriously she did an awesome job kicking both their ***, WAY BETTER than Ares.

Yeah.

Kim Dotcom's political aspirations in New Zealand took a hit recently after it came out that he has an autographed copy of that book...

Rape him back? I think I would've gone game-of-thrones on him.
