Wouldn't it be easier to maintain less servers? They pulled the plug on servers before. Don't see why they wouldn't do another purging.
I think they're scared of the bad message it might give to the world.
Altough at this point, does it even matter? They said they'll consider server merging after summer. 355 people on Slyph.
18:29 GMT+1 (aka BST) Slyphs a nice level of quiet, i like it. Think they are trying to milk server transfers sadly, there's no other excuse for them not doing it until NOV.

My suspicion is less that, and more that their process for migration is so weak. Unless they've improved on it, if someone on the server you're moving to so much as made a mule that shares your character's name, you'll have to change it. Could have been for a month in 2007, and it wouldn't change things. When Pandemonium got merged with Asura, I'd say 30-40% of the people I knew had to change their names, possibly greater. At this point, it might be a 50/50 shot or worse. It makes being on the moved side of a merge pretty crappy, in some ways. Not merging the servers yet gives returning players the greatest chance to actually find people they used to play with...on the slim chance that they actually come back for the finale and all. That's also something that they should still be able to work on after November, since it's account management stuff not content. So, I'd imagine, that kind of development work has been sidelined for the time being as they push to get as much added to the game while they still can. Offline

I think it's part milking transfers, part not wanting to sound the death knell of merges until RoV is completed, and part wanting to be very, very sure how many servers they will actually need, since the odds are this will be the last merge, given how much of a pain in the *** they are for all involved.
Honestly, what I would do is, instead of merging existing servers, bring up two or three new ones and give everyone a one-shot, free, mandatory transfer to one of the new ones. The reason for that is, it'd give people some server-wide goals to accomplish (colonization, campaign, walk of echoes, besieged, etc). Asura is at around 760 in the evening. If I'm not mistaken it was around 2,000 in 2005. So, the game has definitely lost some players, but it does manage to feel populated somehow...
