[Dev] Merit cap and category adjustments

| Good evening, Vana'diel!
As a part of the character growth system, we will be increasing merit caps and adding new categories in the future. However, we will not be removing the cap entirely.
The reason we are not removing this cap is because it would allow players to ultimately max out everything and cause characters to become universal or too versatile.
The whole idea behind merit points is to offer many choices and allow players to choose based on their preferences. This way, even though it’s the same job amongst everyone, their proficiencies and roles are different. With that said, by totally removing the cap from merit points, the fundamental purpose would be lost. | |

Limiting them seems quite pointless.
Edit: Job specific merits and stats etc are fine with caps, as you can make up for those with gear and such.
But the merit WS limit sucks. If you have very many jobs leveled your limited to a few that are the best and the rest of them are basically eliminated.

Wasn't this always the reason?
I honestly agree, though. I believe there is such a thing as being "too versatile." Everyone being able to merit everything just wouldn't seem right, or even fair to an extent. I've always found main jobs to be important because that's your rep.. Not trying to say people shouldn't be able to do-it-all, just that they should choose what matters to them most and stick with it.
Anyhoos, i'm always stoked for updates to merits. More space for for combat skills is always welcomed with open arms..
New categories is also sounding nice.

Current merit system is like if level 60 WOW's talent system and diablo2's had an abortion, and the abortion didn't end up aborting and it actually turned into a real baby.
There are no choices, there is "useful" and "i have nowhere else to put my points so what the hell"

Limiting them seems quite pointless. Meanwhile I would like to be able to use all of the available Weapon Skills to their fullest effect, I do think there should be a cap. As much fun as earning 100 Merits to max out a weapon skill was, devaluing them by removing the cap would only stand to give S-E other ideas on devaluing them.
Personally I think 5 would be a good Weapon Skill Merit cap.

Y'know, Final Fantasy XI has already evolved to the point where anyone can be adequate at any job with next to no effort. You can level a job to 99 in half a week, and if you have any initiative at all, have full +1 (or even +2) Empyrean armor. And that, as it seems, is plenty adequate for the community.
Square-Enix limiting our merits in any way isn't limiting our ability to be versatile, it's simply allowing us to specialize. You can have 20 jobs available for Lv.99, but the way merits are structured you really have to choose if you want one super-specialized job, two somewhat-specialized jobs, three barely-specialized jobs, and so on.

if they didnt give us a choice between merits, then they might as well just make the meritable abilities/stats already included in the jobs. basically, you can look at it this way-
every job gets 5 to each stat, or you can choose 15 stats to put somewhere. its just a little bit of individuality. thats all. and i strongly agree that they shouldnt remove the cap. i think they need to expand a few areas, and add some- hhp/hmp
but i think another merit category for each of the jobs would be cool. something to expand on their 2h or their previous merits, or abilities they already have- like another meritable tier of fast cast for rdm, mab for blm, mag deb for wh,. def up for pld, mp up for smn, hp up for mnk. so on

Someone needs to get that fork picture for SE. How can they even say ***like that? Fundamentals for diversity? In every FF that has ever incorporated the Job system; specialization for specific situations always trumps diversity for all situations. There's never been much reason to be diverse, other than having the healer that is generally necessary :/ This game sure didn't ever give even the slightest notion that diversity was the way to go. Back in 05~06 you couldn't beat most COP fights or much of anything worth doing with diversity. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE
Though I will admit to being guilty of loving it when people mix it up. Subduer WAR at 75 cap >_> /guilty.

If they had a bit more vast of a selection in utility and functions to merit, then perhaps their philosophy would be of sound logic. However, there's basically the good stuff, and the pointless stuff, so putting that under the guise of "specialization" is rather dumb.
