He should've chucked it in the wood-chipper,
I know the economy is rough right now, but do high school kids even work anymore? Retail, waiting tables, bussing tables, checking out groceries, whatever?

Businesses will snatch them up too. Any entry level position is better filled by someone with no experience than someone that's over-qualified. It'll keep wages low.
On a serious note, I think he's a good parent. Shooting the laptop may have been overboard, but I see what sentiment he was trying to enforce. I never had much growing up, but when I did I valued it... if she's so spoiled though, I doubt it'd have made as much of an impact upon her as it would've upon me. This video unnerved me. This girl's life sounds like a cakewalk. He didn't even mention extracurriculars. Glad my parents made us get jobs in our teens.
yeah a lot of kids my age (17-19ish) in my area work, a lot, most of the time not even really cause they care about the money so much as finding something to do, this states super boring Sylph.Sagiaurex said: » yeah a lot of kids my age (17-19ish) in my area work, a lot, most of the time not even really cause they care about the money so much as finding something to do, this states super boring I just haven't seen a lot of kids doing work around here lately. Seems like college students and up, even in menial jobs. I understand that it's really competitive now too, I just find it weird when people know how shitty the economy is, but aren't competitive enough to get some work experience to at least get a foothold after college. Wow.
Oh man, the laptop sends it home. "Hey dad you see my laptop?" "Yeah here it is." "WTF" "Problem?" Caitsith.Zahrah said: » I just haven't seen a lot of kids doing work around here lately. Maybe it depends on where you are, but nowadays it seems like most places refuse to hire kids under 18 by policy, and even a lot of "entry level" jobs prefer people with experience. A teenager's best bet is probably to just put all their attention on doing well in high school, hopefully get most of their college paid for, go full time and get a degree as soon as possible. But another to publicly post your grievances with unwarranted slander against your parents and family members on facebook and having the nerve to block them from viewing it (as if that'd do anything).
Everyone has a rebellious stage in life and a time where you hate your parents and fail to fathom whatever they're doing is in your best interest. But to lash out against your parents on facebook among your peers is probably the most lowdown scummy way of going about it. You may not like what you have to do, but life comes with responsibility and obligations whether you like it or not, and there will be times where you simply have to grit your teeth and deal with it. And for all the wonderful things she has that her parents were kind enough to give her privilege to, and for how little she has to give in return, she had no right to do what she did. Disrespect to your elders, let alone your own parents comes at a high price. I'm just glad her folks had the balls to call her out on it and address it, because most won't, and out of fear, neglect or stupidity let their kids get away with social murder. Which is probably why we see so many rotten little shitheads in our world today. /rant I miss the days when Facebook was exclusively a college network because of cases like this. They really need to put some age restrictions on FB.
My aunt is having problems with her teenage daughter right now. She's about to turn sixteen. Doesn't want/refuses to apply for jobs, won't help with household chores, is performing poorly in school, lies about her assignments, and isn't doing any extracurriculars, etc. Her younger sister is doing great though. /shrug EDIT: Oh! She was almost booted out of school for internet bullying last year too. They take that ***serious in Germany! I wouldn't say it's entirely essential for a minor to hold a job while in school. I was never pressured to get one (or to do much of anything for that matter), but instead focused on academics and experienced a great deal of success. I didn't find myself participating in any illegal activities or breaking any laws as a teenager, nor was my capacity to function efficiently in the work force daunted because of it.
Now, if the family structure in question is financially incapable of permitting such unemployment while in school (and, arguably, even into college years), the situation may change. Laissez faire parenting worked wonders on me, and I intend to use it in the coming years when I too am faced with similar parenting choices. Quote: Everyone has a rebellious stage in life and a time where you hate your parents and fail to fathom whatever they're doing is in your best interest. Never had that stage myself The older and older I get, the less I agree. College is great for expanding the mind – if it's put to use in such a way, and considering most my peers, it's not. It's a means to a job by amassing massive debt lately. These days, I'd honestly encourage kids to bolster their own critical thought, find their passion, and create something new. It's really only the heavy, heavy things that require a college degree, like becoming a doctor, engineer or scientist. Most other things, natural talent can get your foot in the door, especially with the internet and so many tech savvy folks willing to spread their knowledge.
If I was that father, I'd stay good and healthy for as long as possible. That kid will probably remember this once he gets up there in years and dump him into the shittiest nursing home possible. I'd sure hope not.

I applaud you for not letting it dictate your actions out of misled spite. Caitsith.Zahrah said: » Cerberus.Tikal said: » The older and older I get, the less I agree. I totally understand where he's coming from and stuff, but some of the stuff is kinda ridiculous. Making your daughter make your bed? That's just kinda lazy and sad. Probably an exaggeration on her part, but even the wildest exaggerations have moments of truth. I agree with him on like 95% of this ***though. Disrespectful, ungrateful, little ***.

Fact is without a college degree you're going to be passed over regardless of how much natural talent you have. Unless you plan to leap out of HS into an entrepreneurial venture, you should at the least consider some college education. The degree shows you can commit to something. Doesn't mean blow all of your family savings on it either. The best combination is networking coupled with your degree in hand for people to take you seriously. Obviously it's great if someone can pull you aboard a job but without the degree by yourself? It's a recipe for trouble, no matter how much people try to exclaim that bachelor degrees are "worthless" now.
