You know who I feel really horrible for??? Newly graduated under-grads. Things went bust when I graduated in 2008. I can't imagine what it's like for them now. I'm convinced that the only reason I found my job so easily and have maintained my job is because I went to school with the president's son. Who you know...That's all it's about right now. Merit has been totally sacked.

You have any pictures with him?
President of the company. Not Obama! LOL!
Thought you meant Bush, lol.
Now, when would I ever meet Bush, and why would I want to? I guess I can stake out Highland Park in Dallas if need be, or just get seats behind home plate at a Rangers game, but I like being with the drunk rowdies between second and third. Now that is entertainment!!!

Actually, he's a pretty good guy. My dad knows him.

Oh, obligatory: Keep Austin Weird
That's kind of cool. I imagine he couldn't be all that bad one-on-one, but that goober just made us a laughing stock!
Oh, obligatory: Keep those Johnny-Dallas-Carpetbaggers from building a Razoo's on Barton Springs!
Hmmm...Did not know this, but Jenna and Barbara were Kappa Alpha Thetas and they went to Hockaday. I bet they're uber snotty! I had a trustafarian acquaintance who attended Hockaday during HS. She had a nose-job at age fifteen. That girl was...Errr...Ummm...Interesting?
Getting so off-topic now, but yeah she reminds me of this...
i met rick perry once >.> he seemed less douchey and HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE when he was the lt. gov
He came to our school I think my junior year since we consistently were on the exemplary list of schools for math and science. Funny seeing that guy in his boots and suit in an AP Bio and AP Anatomy and Physiology classroom, seeing as though he's done his best to get creationism in classrooms.

I went on a field trip to the capital building to watch congress in session :|
then we got to meet him after.
(btw the stuff they talk about in there is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE, the time I went there, they were talking about pesticides for killing ticks)
The government has the American military on their side,...
It really doesn't.
No? :o That's somewhat encouraging. I doubt there would ever be another civil war, but if there was, do you think the people would have the support of the military?
I recall when things went south in Libya, the military forces therein were greatly divided between the cause of the fascist leader and the protests of the people. Slowly they gave into the cries of the people at large, but not until extreme sacrifices were made, and innocent blood was shed.
I simply hope it never comes down to violence, but rather a looming and tangible reminder that the people are in power by mass, both by vote and by what both politicians and corporations worship most: consumerism. We hold that power in our hands, and if organized and resolute in a fundamental cause, we can have them down to a pathetic whimper and a crawl.

One of my buddies worked for Texas Commission of Agricultural Safety after law-school. He said that environmental law in TX is such a cluster-***. A cow shits in a river and it could kill some bacteria, so environmentalist took arms, and dismissed the fact that rural ranchers don't make a lot of money and need money themselves. Needless to say, he's an ambulance chaser now.
Nice going to the Guadalupe with him. If someone gets rowdy and is stopped by a cop, he paddles his *** over to the bank with, "Hi! I'm this man/woman's legal council! Is there a problem, officer?" We affectionately call him "The River Lawyer" and "Oasis's Attorney". That's another fun one! We were downtown, and some guid-neck started ***with one of my guy friends. I don't remember the details of everything that went on, but he busted out with, "Have you ever heard of a little band called Oasis? Yeah...I represent them." Love that goofball!

I love you so infinitely more than before because you posted TLI
They will attack it until they succeed. Its just like all the greenhouse crap we went through the last 10 years. The will push it and push it, then when something else catastrophic happens they will pass it under the radar when it's finally no longer on the minds of the general public.
By 2020 say goodbye to the "free" internet.
The only way to avoid this would be to strike a blow that encases our legislators in fear of us as people. United we stand, divided we fall. A democracy is led by its people, not by an elected few that work above the law.
EDIT: Should the need arise, I would gladly take on the roll of V.
I'm already ready for this, the time is closing in and these bills show it clearly. I'm getting sick of having to contact senators/ect over stupid bills like these when these bills should be a no brainier to shoot down. They really don't A. do their job at all. or B. don't care about anyone but themselves . . .
dunno how legit the source is but someone in my guild's facebook group posted this in the chat
He did briefly mentioned something about stopping counterfeiting in his speech on Tuesday. Although all the searches so far aren't from what I would consider legit sources, it does seem plausible.
Because ACTA deals in part with criminal law, the application of which is entirely up to national governments, it qualifies in the EU as a 'mixed agreement'. This is why it was signed in January by a European Commission representative as well as by ambassadors from EU member states, including Poland and the UK.
The rules around mixed agreements say the legislatures of every EU member state, as well as the European Parliament, all have to provide ratification. The European Commission confirmed to ZDNet UK that if just one member state does not ratify ACTA, the deal will not enter into force anywhere within the EU.
As yet, none of ACTA's 31 signatories has ratified it, and seven countries, including EU member states Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands and Slovakia, have so far declined to sign the document at all.
The Recording Industry Association of America found itself in an unusual position this week: opposing an anti-piracy bill that's gaining momentum in Congress.
"The OPEN Act does nothing" to stop online infringement and "may even make the problem worse," the industry group says in a statement it is circulating on Capitol Hill this week. "It does not establish a workable framework, standards, or remedies. It is not supported by those it purports to protect."

That's all fine and dandy in theory, but the United States is actually not a true democracy. It is a democratic republic in which the people elect officials to govern. Congress answers to big business and the lobbyists with the deepest pocket.
Try not to be naive about it, because money rules the world and these changes to the internet as we know it are inevitable. I hate it, but I know there isn't much to be done about it.

get rid of Congress
change how officials are elected
make lobbying/sanctioned bribes illegal
elect NEW officials
edit: I'm all for a ruling class, because the masses are idiots however I disagree with who benefits in the current ruling class.
After the defeat of SOPA and PIPA there is, as expected, more threats to the internet as we know it.
Here are two of them and a little info on them.
OPEN (Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act):
Quote:
The OPEN Act was proposed as an alternative to the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), which was approved by the United States Senate Judiciary Committee in May 2011, and the closely related Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which was introduced by House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) in November. After an initial description on December 2 as an outline of possible approaches authored by a bipartisan group of eleven lawmakers, a draft text was made public on December 8, 2011 in advance of a House Judiciary markup of the SOPA Act the following week. The OPEN Act seeks to stop transfers of money to foreign websites whose primary purpose is piracy or counterfeiting, whereas SOPA and PIPA also seek to require Internet providers and search engines to redirect users away from viewing the sites. The PROTECT IP Act proposed to do this by blocking domain name resolution, whereas SOPA imposes a broader requirement for network providers to "prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States" including blocking by IP address and possibly deep packet inspection.
OPEN places enforcement responsibility on the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), which currently adjudicates patent-related disputes, rather than the United States Justice Department. The ITC would be given power to collect fees from complainants and to hire additional personnel for investigations.
Proponents of the OPEN Act describe it on the the KeepTheWebOpen website as a way to protect the rights of artists like SOPA and PROTECT IP, but differing from its rivals by not introducing new internet police powers or undermining calls for open internet in closed societies, and by protecting legitimate internet businesses, social media, legitimate websites and internet innovation. They say that their proposal, but not its rivals, ensures that intellectual property cases will be resolved by intellectual property experts, and will target the actual criminals running foreign rogue websites. They criticize SOPA, but not PROTECT IP, for failing to apply due process to judging websites.
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a proposed plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement. It would establish an international legal framework for countries to join voluntarily, and would create a governing body outside international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) or the United Nations. Negotiating countries have described it as a response "to the increase in global trade of counterfeit goods and pirated copyright protected works." The scope of ACTA includes counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet. Groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) oppose ACTA, stating that civil society groups and developing countries were excluded from discussion during ACTA's development in an example of policy laundering.
Canada, the European Union and Switzerland joined the preliminary talks throughout 2006 and 2007. Official negotiations began in June 2008, with Australia, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and Singapore joining the talks. Apart from the participating governments, an advisory committee of large US-based multinational corporations was consulted on the content of the draft treaty, including the International Intellectual Property Alliance, (which includes the Business Software Alliance, Motion Picture Association of America, and Recording Industry Association of America) and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. The treaty calls for the creation of an "ACTA committee" to make amendments, for which public or judicial review are not required. Industry representatives may have "consultatory input" to amendments. A 2009 Freedom of Information request showed that the following companies also received copies of the draft under a nondisclosure agreement: Google, eBay, Intel, Dell, News Corporation, Sony Pictures, Time Warner, and Verizon.
