If you are going for an engineering degree, obtain it, and do not know any sort of CAD it will be terribly difficult to find a job in the field. I would suggest you pick up a class on Pro Engineer, it's the most popular program out there at the moment, and we are making the transition to it at my workplace. Best of luck with the program, and stick with it when it gets tough. :)

Edit: typo

I'm not going for engineering degree, I'm going for electrical engineering. Yes I do realize that it's still engineering but it's not the same.

Also as to "a job in the field" I plan to work for myself so I won't really have to worry about that, although I do realize that the lack of cad would hinder this goal and I've considered learning it, but it's not at the top of my list.

Not going to quote from above, but electric cars are OLD, first done in the waning days of the 19th century.

As long as cars were considered toys or short range vehicles they were competitive.

The early electrics had motors that were well over 80% efficient. Today I think they run 98ish. Today's gas engines are getting close to 40% efficient. (I will spare you the whys unless you ask.)

The batteries are the new part, the electronic controls (biggest part, regenerative braking) from the 1970s.

As to building one? There is an annual convention of car converters. Search "electric car conversion"

converting a car would be a lot simpler task, however if I'm going to "create" one, I'm going to do it from near scratch.
