Verastility means exactly jack squat in Abyssea. It's all about the specialist jobs being the best possible candidates for what they are there to do. I love RDM, I was level capped considerably before Abyssea, and I've seen firsthand that RDM is just not necessary to get the job done in Abyssea. In such a specialized setting, there is no room for hybrid jobs. RDM, DRK, BRD, etc all got tossed aside. If you aren't there to proc an NM, you're just xp grinding.
Sure, tier 2 enfeebs with saboteur can be very helpful, but they're not required. Same with Refresh 2; very nice, but not necessary. Unless you're just in a xp grind, there's no point anywhere where someone goes "Gee, we really need a RDM!". Proc dark with Dispel, maybe.
Like I said, I love RDM. But SE really has no idea WTF they are doing with the job at this point in the game. I have a laundry list of rants regarding SE dropping the ball with this job across other threads, so I won't spam them here.
TBH, i miss the important role rdm used to play. I was a career rdm in dynamis esp. I perfected and respected that job through the years as it was my 1st lvl 75 and once i hit 41 my ffxi fate was sealed. Exp parties loved rdm/whm and in alot of places rdm/~ was a necessity and I was that guy. By the time Aby expansions came out I had other jobs whos roles also completely changed but none worse than rdm.
It was a slow death too. RDM was exposed for having refresh and refresh alone. I still like to make mobs so enfeeb they are HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE if i play rdm cause its fun and it shouldnt be done better than a rdm can. Find the weaknesses and expose them until its dead.
Most the time alot has changed because i dont have to do any of the old expansions, (adventure), and exp parties anymore so because of this i have to consider that rdm is still a valuable job in those places, you know, outside of abyssea. Besides Port Jeuno

In Arrapago Remnants, you don't have access to a subjob, so you can't accession Phalanx. Therefore having Phal2 merits are useful. It's not necessary by all means but it's more efficient if you happen to have the merits for god knows why.
For what? Sure Salvage if you still do it, otherwise if you need Phalanx outside you have /SCH with Accession Phalanx. There's more useful things to merit.

Dia III, Slow II, Para II should all be unlocked at minimum, yes. Maybe not Dia III if all you do is solo, but if you do anything involving DDs it should be unlocked. Phalanx II? Nah.

Yeah, the meaning is versatility, but when besides Salvage do you need Phalanx II when you should just be doing Accession Phalanx? And yes, you're gimp for not leveling SCH, that's no reason to promote meritting Phalanx II though. It has 0 use outside of Salvage, and even then since the level cap raise it's just "nice" not "needed".
Edit: Even at 75 it was a mule merit. No self-respecting solo RDM would merit that, lol.

Sorry, I was waiting to go in Abyssea for a LSE, and while standing there on Red Mage (the job that I am always on), I got bored, and wanted to vent my frustration.
