I am working on the multi-hit magian dagger, and I am currently on Trial 1097. The next trial will decide whether I am going for OA2-4 or DA+10%. What dagger would be the better choice, and why?

Other threads have been made about this.

2-4 is good for TP
Double Attack is ok for TP and good for WS

but yeah. :\

Edit: Though, they were made in the THF forum...

For healing or Aeolian Edging, OA2-4 is better.

For DDing, DA+10% is the better choice. DA+10% has a substantial DPS advantage on OA2-4, and it isn't *that* far behind in TP gain. It also gives a higher base damage main hand for weaponskill (and DA+10% on weaponskill).

Yeah, I'd say so. The OA2-4 has better TP gain if you aren't using Saber Dance, but Saber Dance brings them very close together.

Byrth is spot on.

For what it's worth, I've had a completed OA2-4 for months now and I rarely make use of it. I almost always offhand an AGI or STR Kila +2.

I should buckle down and work on the DA10% dagger, but I want to see what the next level increases have in store before I jump on that treadmill again. :/

Same. Also, because TA checks first, the DA+10% dagger is a little less-good for THF than it is for Dancer.

Question, if you plan on doing twashtar would you still do DA for offhand or would OA2-4 be better then?

Thank you very much, I think I am gonna do the DA+10% dagger.

I'd do a Kila. Yes I realize I just option C'd your question, but DA weapons almost invariably lose to their elemental counterparts as offhand choices to an Empyrean and OA4 is terrible for DDing period. If I did upgrade one at that point, it would probably be the OA4 for TP gain in healing situations (paired with Phurba) and when using Aeolian Edge.

Yeah, if you're doing Twashtar you lose one of the advantage DA+10% offers (higher main hand base damage). At that point, a better DD offhand is an STP Fusetto +2 or a STR Kila +2.

I would have to disagree that Kila is a better offhand than a double attack +10 dagger. +10% double attack is going to have a huge advantage over 9 str and 20 attack for Rudra's, not to mention for tp gain. The double attack dagger also has +2 base damage over the kila, not enough to trump 9 str and 20 attack, but +10% double attack sure is.

High delay negates the TP gain advantage due to DNC's inherently low delay. 10 DA on WS is not nearly as huge when you consider Saber Dance, DA/TA gear, and Rudra's fTP - it's less than a 4% increase in WS damage outside Abyssea, less than 3% inside (AoA). A fulltime bonus of 24.5 attack and possibly 2-3 fSTR will easily beat that.

We could go through and math it out, but you're undervaluing attack and potentially fSTR.

My base Dancer attack is about 440ish in TP gear on Dancer/Ninja at 90 outside Abyssea, meaning that a STR/Atk Kila +2 is ~Attack +5%. I'm not in danger of hitting the attack cap for Red Curry Buns, so we can ignore food.

Attack +5% is a greater than 5% increase in damage, though how much greater depends on the level of the target and its defense.
