I was wondering in FFXI does critical hit rate factor in only when hitting or when weapon is swung? I was in stats today thinking about how to apply a problem to FFXI and was thinking about how if you have 95% ACC, and 15% Crit hit rate if it would be affected by the misses and what then the actual effective crit rate would be.

AKA - Is it possible to "critical miss"?

You can't crit if you miss, so tech no? I guess?

There is no such thing as a critical miss. As Uzugami said, you can't crit if you miss.

Example:
You have 95% accuracy and 15% critical hit rate.
You attack a monster 100 times.

95 out of 100 hits will hit, while 5 out of 100 hits will miss.
Out of the 95 hits, 15% of those will be critical hits, meaning you would crit 14 times out of the 95 regular hits (actually 14.25, but I assume the game would round down).

In the end, you get a breakdown of:
5 misses
14 critical hits
81 hits

This is all provided I did my math right.

Ignoring him or being overly nice to him is the best solution imo.

Everthing is on a per-swing basis.

If you hit the mob, there is a chance you will crit.

95% of your attacks hit
95% of those hits are crits
.95 x .95 = .9025 = 90.25% of your total swings are crits.

On a side note, this makes me wonder how many times people have parsed crit rates and forgot to filter out misses. It could have made a noticeable discrepancy.
edit: unless the parser already knows to ignore misses on crit rates.

Yes, but Mighty Strikes is a forced 100% critical hit rate. The player is still grounded by how much accuracy they have. Just because they have a 100% critical hit rate doesn't mean that all hits will automatically connect.

Assuming 95% accuracy and 95% critical hit rate, and that FFXI runs on a 2 roll system (first the game rolls for hit/miss > if = hit, then rolls for normal/crit).

95 out of 100 attacks will land.
90 out of those 95 attacks will be critical hits.

Breakdown:
5 misses
5 regular hits
90 critical hits

Now, using your thoughts on Mighty Strikes.

Assuming 95% accuracy and 100% critical hit rate (forced with Mighty Strikes).

95 out of 100 attacks will land.
95 out of those 95 attacks will be critical hits because Mighty Strikes forces all melee attacks THAT HIT to be critical hits.

Breakdown:
5 misses
95 critical hits

You'd get the same result if the game checked for crit at the same time as acc, because the miss+crit still would show up as misses.
