You need to grab a couple friends, have everyone face east with a wind crystal, touch all the ebon panels at the same time and then simultaneously kill all the Bhumi's in the zone. Then he will pop.

The other day I was exp'ing on worms and a big worm monster came up from the ground and casted a spell and killed me. It was BS.
I gained my exp back as soon as I was raised, but still.
