Wiki is ugly
Where are people seeing these trees? Because all i'm seeing is a one-inch-long bar with a single tree >_>
Lakshmi.Galvaya said: if nobody noticed, if you're a registered user, you can change the default skin, to its previous monaco under user->preferences->skins tab-> Monaco. and save. lol You are awesome and I will now vote for you should you decide to rule the world. Monaco is gone come November 3rd, so he'll only be ruling the world until then.
Best thing that can happen is if people start up a new website(looking at you Scragg/Jaerik!) for all that stuff. Once the new website is in place, have a huge sabotage on the Wikia site by encouraging lots of people to put little pieces of false information on the site. Eventually, it becomes a less reputable source of information, and people would start to use the new website. Wikia has a huge shitstorm as other people "pull out" from using them and they eventually die out or try and recoup their losses. Adding a Wikia-like database section to this site could use a real authentication method for posting information to pages so it's not some random person putting up false information. Unfortunately, Scragg and Jaerik have enough on their plates now to deal with without having to worry about adding a huge database into the mix. Its times like this I really miss the days when somepage was both safe and regularly updated. I effin hate wikia.
Also loved somepage.com, as they had an actually functionally useful mob search.
Anyway, for those using Firefox with the Stylish plugin (or who can otherwise implement per-site user CSS in their browser), I've constructed several overrides on the site design here: http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=25988&p=335845#p335845 It includes a bit of my messing around with background gradients, so if you don't like the colors (which are chosen mostly to be distinct for the purpose of testing, not 'pleasing'), just change or get rid of them. And for the person who mentioned the drop-down menus getting in the way, add this rule: .GlobalNavigation .subnav.show { display: none !important; } and they won't pop up anymore. The fundamentals of the redesign aren't that bad, and the site code is well architected. Even making the fixed width the default isn't a problem, as most small wikis can work within that space. The hardcore refusal to allow changes to make the actual site content usable on a case-by-case basis (and FFXI wiki definitely needs those adjustments), though, really kills it. My issue is when adverts cover part of the information, also when you try to go to see say... the bottom of a page like say body armors, you hit the "End Key" and then when you scroll up just a little bit, it leaps you to the top of the page because of the bottom green bar scroller. THAT is the WORST thing in my opinion when you change somthing and it makes native key functions impossible to use! Couldnt be much worse even if they disabled refresh on a webpage!
WTF I didn't even know about the change in wiki 'til I read this. What is this ***I don't even...
The biggest problem is alot of the content is hidden by the Recent Wiki Activity block on the right.... Its not it looks bad is just doesn't work for us.
If you guys don't like the fixed width garbage on the wiki, just do these steps:
http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=26003 Sorry, but it's firefox onry. I'm pretty sure you can set up custom CSS files for other browsers, but I pretty much only use firefox. Odin.Zicdeh said: It's almost like they got SE to redesign their interface. Gone are the convenient menus on the left, replaced by a searchbar and links that blend into the *** background OMG yes!! i keep havign search the damn pages just to find where to type for the search funtion like seriously.. a outline was to hard to add? Whatever was the ultimate fate of somepage i know Rmts hacked it or somethign of the like and were useing it to steal accounts but that was few years ago , whatever became of it? Caitsith.Heimdall said: OMG yes!! i keep havign search the damn pages just to find where to type for the search funtion like seriously.. a outline was to hard to add? I just put a fix in on the wiki forum today to fix the search bar to the top of the page. Just follow the link above and do the steps outlined there - it only takes like 2 mins. Wikia forums annoy. What's this whole having the avatar etc on the right? Heresy.
I don't like the new layout at all. Bring back the old one.

Does anyone know if they changed the actual HTML or just the CSS for this?
If just the CSS, then someone more knowledgeable than I could probably make a firefox Stylish theme to just override it with the old theme. I'm trying but can't. I would definitely prefer the old version again because it was easier to read, easy to navigate etc. More pleasing to the eye as well. But I mean it still functions like the old wiki, I haven't used the menus as such yet because I just type straight into the search box normally. Having read the rest of this page though, the fact they didn't even listen to people's input etc is pretty poor. And if people do decide to go else where because of this it would be a shame because as far as I'm aware, wiki is the best place for info. Someone mentioned somepage.com, I do agree that page was pretty decent back in the day. Especially for items and crafting, always useful. This is also another really handy website for times and days etc especially for those who are doing trials and like to plan ahead. http://www.mithrapride.org/vana_time/ I also wrote up a number of variants using Stylish:
http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=25988&p=335845#p335845 I'm still messing around with lots of little things. Though everyone will have their own preferences, it would be nice to have a couple complete overlays that people can use to override the wikia design. Gonna try rewriting the menu system next. They took down monaco for registered users.
Dray, git your *** on!
Unless you're at school or work. Leviathan.Draylo said: Yeah, monobook it is. What I'm using, and it's still ugly. /sigh |
