How many Licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

It takes somewhere between 144 and 411 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
Engineering students at the University of Purdue constructed a licking machine modeled after a human tongue which took 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. When volunteers performed the experiment with their own tongues instead of a machine it took an average of 252 licks.
A doctorate student at the University of Michigan performed a similar experiment, and his licking machine got to the center in 411 licks.
Junior high students at Swathmore School averaged just 144 licks to get to the center of their Tootsie Pops when doing the experiment with their real tongues. Apparently humans are better at eating candy than "licking machines" (and junior high students eat candy faster than college students do).
Tootsie Roll Industries official statement on this subject: "It depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your mouth, the amount of saliva, etc. Basically, the world may never know."
