I totally stole that image and turned it into a thread. I'm a WASD girl here, and I think that anyone who uses the arrow keys to play FFXI should burn in the fiery pits of Ifrit's Cauldron. Same for all you controller-users. D:<

Anyway, out of curiosity.... how do you play FFXI? I'd like a justification as well if you play using a non-sacred method!

Numpad arrows for xi, and reg arrows when I played FPS. I use the mouse lefthanded as a righthander, sue me.

All keyboard for xi though, can anyone even USE a mouse on it effectively?

only if you're a lefty and use the mouse with your left hand...

Only thing the mouse does for me on FFXI is occasionally *** up and makes my character randomly run away or the camera spin in circles because I was alt+tabbing.

SE DOES use WASD if you use compact keyboard, but then you have to hit space to type and can't continue to steer your character while typing.

Funny thing with the mouse is, back when I played WoW I was a mouse girl with some wasd on the side, but the mouse interface for FFXI is just godawful. I use it to navigate through menus and stuff though, even though I know that's not the most efficient way to do things. I also use it for camera angles and what not.

Actually you can steer while typing by clicking the left mouse button and dragging.. but yea that's one less hand to type with lol.. I hardly ever been typing so much I needed to steer while doing so.. I guess it would be bad if you type slow but just get used to it being that way.. sort of auto running for short distance then type then go back to running.

I used the Arrow Keys when I first started playing games a long time ago but quickly switched to WASD (access to more buttons).

For FF I've kept it on Compact style since about 5 mins after I first logged in.. (lets you use WASD). I couldn't stand the NumPad because it was with my right hand and was so used to using left for movement.

I use the mouse some but don't rely on it for anything. More so when I first started because I was used to using it for FPS games etc.. but not much anymore.

only time I ever use the mouse is for moving the camera around when I'm dead. Otherwise, it's 'Compact' keyboard only or not at all!

I couldn't imagine using WASD for XI. How do you type messages if you're using WASD in game? Wouldn't that constantly cause problems? As it is, I prefer the arrows completely given the numpad control setup XI uses. It allows for one handed movement of the player and camera all while allowing my other hand for macro and chatting. Was genius design IMO.

EDIT: I may be more suited to the arrows than a lot of other PC players mainly because FFXI was really my first ever PC game. Before that I played on consoles exclusively.

You can turn that off in the config.

I just hit "R" and auto run and hope that I don't hit a wall or aggro a monster. Generally, I don't type while running for that reason. I honestly wish that FFXI had the mouse setup that WoW has, where you can hit one of the buttons to move forward, and the steering isn't wonky. I don't even know how to describe it unless you've played WoW....

Note: WoW is not a better game IMO, but it has a better designed user interface for the most part.

Can still use arrow keys if you hold down shift, same as if you're in any menus, equip screen, trade, fighting, etc.

I type while running all the time. Unless I'm kiting something I'm pretty much always on auto-run anyway, so I start typing, and if I need to turn I just hit 4 or 6, then hit backspace a couple times to delete the 4's and 6's I just wrote and keep typing :p

I play on PC but I'm using a PS2 controller, I can't imagine playing without it!

I generally dislike having to play games using a keyboard... keyboards are meant for typing, not gaming, I just find them awkward.

When you're used to it, its a hell of a lot easier lol

I'm sure you think the same way about keyboard, much easier because you're used to it.

Gonna have to agree here. xD I would be completely hindered using a controller. When I'm playing anything /whm, or WHM itself, I often type things such as /ma paralyna hyp, or like /ma cure v thor. It's really nice not to have to sift through macro sets, and it's nice to be able to cure people in the alliance fastly and without having to worry about losing your target if they blink. Annnyway, this is my justification anyway. I find controllers cumbersome.

Its easier for typing moving and macros. When you have to swap between controller and keyboard thats a lag that doesnt need to occur.

Can use macros and move at the same time using a controller.

I don't generally chat that much in parties anyway.

Like I said, when you're used it, its a hell of a lot easier.
